I remember Featherstone Rovers playing St. Helens the season after Rovers had beaten Saints 20-6 in the cup. Saints were like the Man U of Rugby League at the time and didn't take kindly to a team of part-timers (most worked at Ackton Hall Colliery) beating them. As Rovers were giving them another tough game, the game erupted not long in. Twenty-four of the twenty-siz players got involved in the brawl. I liked the sight of Cyril Woolford (Rovers winger) and Tom Van Vollenhoven (Saints South African winger) just shaking hands and walking off the pitch together until it had calmed down. That was a very competitive Rovers team with Clawson, Dooler, Fennell and the like. The tough team image continued into the days of Malcolm Dixon and Arnie Morgan. Happy days. The 20-6 victory was probably the most exciting sporting event i ever saw live. There were over 15,000 there in a ground which held just over 7,000. You couldn't get your hands up to applaud, it was that packed. Wouldn't be allowed these days, but the passed children over the heads of the crowd down to the front, so they could see ok.
Agree remember wen r wer playing tight head or loose head, when somebody got nished and 10 was called, let the melee begin, great times and we always had a pint an a sing song in clubhouse.
We beat them in the snow and they blamed that for losing, we drew them again the year after in the third round and beat them again - in dry and sunny weather.
I remember an inter company Rugby Union match between C company and Somme company down in Bulford. Something happened in a scrum and it all kicked off. All I remember was Radar running on the pitch waving his arms around and shouting for everyone to calm down.
