Abide with me still brings a lump to my throat . I thought I was gonna get the chance to sing it in 2008 fekin Cardiff .
That's what I reckon as well.. Scrap the league cup and add the prize money from that into the Checkatrade & FA Vase so the money is filtered down the pyramid a bit more. Whilst they are at it, remove the prem academies from the checkatrade as well, it is meant for lower league clubs not 2nd string premier league & champ clubs.
I disagree (to a degree)...the decision to blitz it completely was the work of charlatans..people running the FA with no idea of either history or football...the money that was spent was enough to do absolutely anything, including the retention of the towers...Germany managed it with the Olympiastadion in Berlin, the Germans have a feel for history...sadly the FA only have a feel for enhancing themselves from corporate financial institutions...and bo**ocks to fans, sentiment or history.
I shall be sniffing cocaine off the tan midriffs of the Guatemalan women’s netball team on a yacht off the coast of Madagascar but if that falls through I will watch it.
Remember as a kid it was shown on BBC and ITV from about 10 in the morning, big build up, coach journey to Wembley the lot, oh and it kicked off at 3, definitely lost its spark IMO
The cup/leagues I have no interest in are those that permit the second, third and fourth best clubs into the tournaments.
used to be something to look forward to - interviews on the team bus, long slow walk out (without fire cannons ticker tape or fireworks it's not the superbowl is it). Jimmy Hill, Des Lynam, jumpers for goalposts. Does seem to have lost something, doesn't seem as 'English' as it used to be, trying to appeal to a world audience by doing what everyone else does just makes it less appealing by losing it's uniqueness.
i was only saying yesterday, i loved cup final day as a kid, put grandstand on at 11-30, go to the teams hotel, then cup final question of sport, watch the teams leaving for wembley etc, abide with me and the national anthem sung by the fans and not a 2nd rate karaoke singer, then switch over at 3 oclock for brian moores commentary, it was genuinely exciting because usually both teams had a chance of winning, sadly due to the money in the game now its become dull and predictable...
The old Wembley was a bit like Hillsborough in that it was falling apart. Went to the Liverpool Wimbledon Final and there were seats that had broken away from their moorings and parts of the terracing where we were, had cracked and was crumbling. Thought when it was announced that they were building a new Stadium, it would have been a lot cheaper to have re-furbed the existing one. The new place has improved, but I remember when we played Cardiff in the Cup Semi final, because the whole complex around it had not been yet been fully developed, the Stadium took on a soulless appearance and was a disappointing experience compared to our previous visits to the old ground. Now, it's used as a cash cow to try and compensate for the amount spent on it. The cost to attend a final on Corporate hospitality, is apparently absolutely eye watering.
One of the greatest documentary series ever made IMO. Never realised photography was so prolific in the 1860s. Recently watched his Vietnam Documentary series too. Equally well researched and edited but rather depressing given it took place in my lifetime and the world is still feeling the effects. I still rate 'World at War' narrated by Lawrence Olivier as probably the greatest documentary series of all time. The fact that many of the participants e.g. Traudl Jung (Hitler's secretary) who was in the bunker at the end) were still alive and inerviewed gives an immediacy that subsequent documentaries using reconstructions and actors fails to do.
The Checkatrade was the only English competition City entered and did not win. They could have won that if they had tried a bit harder.
