On Friday my grandson, Daniel, joined the commentary team at Oakwell. He had a wonderful time, and was invited to the press conference after the game. He is quiet but confident, so went in and sat in DS's seat while he waited! They brought in sandwiches for the journalists and he calmly helped himself to a couple while waiting. When DS came he asked him his name and told him to stay where he was, and that he would take the chair next to him. DS was so kind to him, as were the rest of the Oakwell team who looked after him. Massive thanks to the Club for this. What a brilliant idea to get kids involved. Young Dan is on the Presser video next to DS, sitting there blinking like a solemn little owl as it is all going on around him. That is now one kid who is firmly hooked for the next 60-odd years.
I watched the video and could scarcely concentrate on the interview for watching him. He is a handsome lad and you must be very proud of him
Well, he takes after his granddad for looks! But seriously, I am so proud of him. At his age, 9, I would have been totally phased by that experience and probably hiding under the table.
Do other clubs do things like this? Can't quite understand why we get overlooked for 'family club of the year' when the club treat our next generation fans like royalty. There's this, the family zone, the flag bearing, home visits, school visits, players handing their shirts to young fans after the match... Add this to the fact that U12s season tickets are free, I can't see what more the club could do to welcome their fans of the future. You must be very proud of your Grandson though. Like you say, most would crumble with nerves. Good on him.
If Milkwall get family club I'm not sure we want that accolade! Love the giving away of shirts and also love the way the players respond on social media to the youngsters. One of the plus points about supporting little old Barnsley.
Well I think I know why too. I know someone in the East Stand who used to get the seat next to him as a free ticket for his daughter. She never went, but if some gobby clown sat next to him, he was within his rights to ask them to move as that was 'his seat'. That's abusing it, for me. But free or a tenner, the point still stands that it is a great way to get future fans on board. My lad is in his third year of paying (£95) for his ticket. I go, my nephew goes, they buy shirts, programmes, clobber from the club shop, we go to plenty of away games... Basically, over his lifetime, he will put thousands of pounds into the club and it started with a free season ticket.
