The only thing that matters is what you think to mark a minutes silence. It is that moment that defines those that died. Then after it our actions in making sure we don't needlessly send more young men and women off to die for idle rich men and their illegal proxy wars. Let the *******s fight their own wars.

Show respect to what? That's exactly what you were doing lol. I always thought respect is earned not taken for granted. On that basis anyone who has died so I can live a relatively free life has done exactly that..

I only bothered to ask one person. Didn't feel as though I wanted to get into any kind of argument on the topic. He just said I should wear a red one like everybody else. I just left it there

Not thought about it, but do the Everton fans wear blue poppies like they wear blue Santa suits?

I don't personally wear a poppy, but that is my choice. I have attended many rememberence parades throughout the years, and try to have a minutes silence when at work. If forced to wear one, I'd probably look for a black poppy to remember the dead on all sides throughout the years. But it is all down to personal choice and we are lucky enough to still have that.

    FIFA Logic:

Using slave labour to build world cup stadiums - OK
Wearing a commemorative poppy - Not OK

    The BBS is bizarre.

A post questioning the legitimacy of immigrants receives over 120 impassioned responses.

A post questioning the legitimacy of FIFA regarding the poppy as a political symbol receives just 20 something.

Seems a bit odd to me.

I can't say I'd want - for example - the Argentinians, having some kind of symbol commemorating the Falklands on their shirts.

Scotland have just announced that their shirt will have a poppy badge on it.

Maybe secretly hoping that we get slung out of the competition. Would save the embarrassment of coming last in the group.

Well if they are to have a poppy badge then well done Scotland.

Golf, shortbread, Ronnie Glavin, whisky. And balls - even if they have no idea how to play with them.

Theresa Maynot was pandering, I suspect, to the vast numbers of people in this country who will have a knee jerk reaction to the 'anti-poppy' episode and associate FIFA with being disrespectful. I agree with FIFA as it happens based on their position with no politicisation/emblems etc but I think that the real issue is being missed. It's not about wearing a poppy really (although obviously money is raised by sales and it's a visible statement for some). It's simply about being respectful about our fathers, grandfathers, mums, grandmums etc. and we can do that in lots of ways, even before or during a football game. We don't need poppy police on either side to tell us that. We can do that by going to a remembrance service, having a private thought or two, reading a story from WW1, talking to a grandad, watching the remembrance day stuff on telly.........etc..etc....
A big debate about poppies on shirts is not a major issue (hang on..... why am I posting if I don't think it's a major issue...?)

And as usual the Rugby authorities are showing FIFA how you should run an international sport

    Quote from the BBC page

Rugby Football Union chief executive Ian Ritchie has confirmed the England players will wear poppies on their shirts for the autumn Test against South Africa at Twickenham on 12 November.
World governing body World Rugby has been "very supportive", according to Ritchie.
"We are commemorating and remembering all people who have died in conflict. This is not a partisan thing or a political statement," Ritchie told BBC Radio 5 live.

Theresa May is a walking Daily Mail. She thrives on sensationalism, yet she's a boring frumpy old bint.

I hate to stand up for Theresa May but what do you expect her to do. If she had refused to comment and said it was a matter for the FA she would have had genuine anger from the public and press directed at her. This is a non politcal matter and I hope any other PM or party leader would have the same view.

Most rugby playing nations are Commonwealth.

and the poppy doesn't remember ALL who died in conflict, it commemorates the British and Commonweath losses.

I'm no patriotic zealot I wear a white poppy but I think it's pretty appaling that FIFA apply one set of rules to one thing and another to this.

For once Theresa May is right.

The only argument I can see is that monies from poppies go to a specific charity but that seems a little forced to me.
