I really hope you do, it's a pity they wont let us English vote on it ( Not that we should be allowed ) prior to the last referendum just over 70% supported/ wanted Scotland to leave
This this and this. I've never sung the national anthem. I never will sing the national anthem. To sing it would give some hint of pride in this country, and i'm about as proud of this country right now, as I am of Paul Conway and his ill fitting jackets.
Land of hope and glory for me, shouldn't be about the monarch, shouldn't have a monarchy, no one has a divine right to rule over me.
I can get behind "Jerusalem", I haven't sung the national anthem for years - boring tune, crap lyrics bigging up a bunch of inbread Germans, no thanks.
Sorry Ian ‘‘twas a jovial comment hence the smiley face. As was my quote about the welsh. I’d hoped it was read in the manner I intended. It’s based on the sport rivalries between us. Where nobody bar us wants us to win. The sort of conversation I’d have with my Scottish. Welsh. Irish friends in jest. Although some of the buggers genuinely mean it. .
My main point of creating this thread. Was to see if anyone Thought it’s disrespectful not to sing the national anthem. Because I certainly don’t. I would not turn my back on it. Because it is still our national anthem. With no other alternative But sing it no. Found ian’s comments and take on it quite interesting. I for 1 have never taken note of the full lyrics, as like most I would assume. Know only the sung shortened version. Enjoyed reading the responses mind.
Technically, the "4th Verse" has never been part of the national anthem. For a starters it pre dates the formalisation of the anthem its self by around 150 years and was never included in the first published versions of three verses.
I must say many of my friends are of an SNP persuasion but I can't think of any who actually hate the English. The hatred being reserved for Westminster and the tories in general. Of course when it comes to sport we all hate the English. We just love to support ABE. I must confess to once at Wembley in 1979 shouting and whistling gstq down while being there to watch Scotland. But almost 40 years later when attending Barnsley v Oxford and Millwall I just stood in silence. Respected what many wanted to do but Couldn't bring myself to join the party. I've never sung it and never will.
I would not sing it, a) I think the monarchy should be abolished. b) I'm a atheist. So for me it has very little meaning. Deity I don't believe in please save a woman who's right to rule was determined by falling out of a particular vagina. It's a pass from me.
