I think naturally you tend to go for the players who were the best when you first started following football. My first world cups were seeing Zidane & Ronaldo on top of their game & I’ll always have a fondness for them even though Messi & C. Ronaldo have gone to have greater careers & be greater players.

    1. Messi
    2. C. Ronaldo
    3. Zidane

My first tournament was Euro 96 so can’t rank Maradona, Pele, Cruyff etc

I'm just bassing it on the couple of times I saw him in the flesh against us.

Think I recall a league cup tie. Pretty sure he scored a trademark free kick against us in that game.

Dare I ask how old you are mate. Some afore my time watching football there. But certainly shared great names in history of football. What all of these great players could have commanded in wages nowadays is mind blowing.

On the subject of Maradona, you often hear it said how no other great player has ever done what he did & gone to an average / poor side & turned them into champions. Well I’d argue they have very recently & for me it’s probably an even greater achievement than Maradona & Napoli & that’s Kante at Leicester.

Obviously a different type of player & not got the ability of Maradona but went into a Leicester side that had just stayed up the previous season & was their best player as they won the league the very next season. All the rest of the team apart from Fuchs were already there the previous season.

He then left for Chelsea & they went from finishing 10th the previous season to winning the league with Kante in the side.

Without Kante Leicester went from champions to a relegation battle & Ranieri ended up been sacked.

Kante then went on to be an integral part of the France side that won the World Cup in 2018.

Bergkamp for me was a genius, it's what he did off the ball that made him amazing. Henry was special but just look at the positions he took up, between him and Pires, Henry was presented so many opportunities to run at defenders and stand them up or sit em on their backsides.

In my time watching football, Zinedine Zidane is the greatest player I've seen.

There's some great videos on YouTube where someone has picked out all the touches one player has had in a match. There's one with all of Zidane's touches in (I think) Euro 2000. Everything he does is absolute gold, and drives the team forward.

There's a great one of Gazza, I think it's the Euro 96 game against the Netherlands.

    My top 5:
    Zidane
    Gascoigne
    C.Ronaldo
    Messi
    Ronaldinho
