My mates sister married Archie Taylor, who lived in our village. He had spells with Donny, Barnsley York, Halifax and Hull. After Donny manager Peter Doherty left Belle Vue, he took over at Bristol City and Archie was his first signing. As you say DR , John Atyeo was a legend at Bristol and was also capped by England. At the first training session, Archie said
Atyeo was coming over as Billy Big Ballax in front of the new signings the Club had made. In his time, Doherty had won the First Division title with Man City and the FA Cup with Derby. He was an Irish international and was blessed with a natural ability for the game. He decided to set the team a challenge. Each player had to put the ball on the penalty spot and chip it, with the intention of hitting the crossbar as many times as they could out of ten shots. Atyeo went first and managed to hit the bar five times. No one in the rest of the squad managed to better his total. Doherty was apparently wearing a raggy old training top, white shorts and a pair of plimsolls. As the players looked on he stepped up and put the ball on the spot and unerringly hit the crossbar ten out of ten times. Archie said the entire squad were open mouthed and spontaneously gave the boss a round of applause. After that incident Archie said that the players gave their boss nothing but total respect.
