I've heard the council will no longer collect and empty Green bins next year and it will be an extra paid for service. Not sure how much this will be but i think Rotherham brought this in last year and it cost £39 for a period - which i'm not sure whether that was for all year or for so long... Anyone else heard this?
Yes the 39 quid was for all year round in Rotherham. Previously the service was free but only ran between April and October. Sheffield have done it for a while and it was only a matter of time before Barnsley jumped on board.
It's a shame in some ways as I can see some people dumping cuttings etc but before they brought it in you had to take it to the tip, so that coat time and money.
Be a shame if this kind of thing encouraged concreting over gardens, poor upkeep of gardens, burning green waste or flytipping the waste.
South Oxfordshire have been charging for garden waste ever since such bins were introduced. I think the charge is £39 so that is the going rate. We get a collection every fortnight. I reckon it save me regular trips to the amenity tip and is worth it. Of course I would like it to be free, however, it is probably doing a tiny bit to recycle waste that at one time would have gone to landfill. I hope that it does not increase fly tipping. It probably will. £30+ for bin emptying will be pretty low down on some people's priorities. I know people who just put their green waste inwith the landfill (or in our case) the waste that is incinerated and where they can I have seen garden waste dumped on amenity land or in ditches. Local Authorities are under continued financial pressure and sometimes have to make decisions which they must know will generate unwanted side effects.
Southwark council introduced a £30 annual charge this year too. They do check it every week though all year round... though i'm not sure what garden waste they are expecting in January! I can understand it mind you. One of our neighbours has mud and a couple of badly kept shrubs, the next garden over they've committed the criminal act of putting down plastic grass (surely that has to be made illegal... with all the issues with plastic and the environmental agenda finally getting more coverage.... plastic grass, really?). And at my mums in Barnsley, several people of late have flagged or concreted over their back gardens fully. Really quite sad seeing we broke our backs to make a garden when she moved in and since then, there are at least 3 nearby neighbours that have removed any trace of nature.
It doesn't increase fly tipping at all. Works fine in Rotherham. People can bag it and put it in the black bin, but obviously that reduces the amount you fit in the black. It also hinders the recycling and disposal process. Waste collection is in included in Council Tax yes, but around 60p of your monthly payment goes towards it. The green waste service is generally run at a huge loss each year- so the choice seems to be get rid of it or charge for it. There are more things to moan about with local authorities than a 75p weekly charge.
Council tax goes up each year but you get less for your money it’s proven that since council went to fortnightly bin collections fly tipping has increased
That's exactly what I do living in Sheffield. I've only got a 3m squared patch so not much to get rid of. Also, anything that is put in the black bin in Sheffield gets incinerated at the veolia plant to provide energy for some local housing. Not sure where Barnsley waste gets sent to though.
