Been a charge for garden waste (as distinct from recycling) since it was first introduced in the Dales. It’s optional whether to take it though. Most do “becoz we’re considerably richer than yow.”
I put my lawn trimmings in a bag and put it in in the general waste bin - there's always room in there now that we re-cycle plastic as well as paper, glass and cardboard.
Does anybody know if, when paid for extra, a household can opt to have more than one green bin if they pay the fee?
In the last decade (Tory reign) local government funding has been reduced by 40%. The highest in the country. Barnsley that is. As regards fly tipping. at least green waste rots down. ( Don't see that putting off the morons that dump beds, furniture fridges, etc. ( Dovecliffe a disgrace) . My green bin probably would get filled twice a year . Not cost effective I would have thought.
dont know about your region, but mine it’s an annual fee per bin, so yes you can have more but have to pay for it
It’s a poser this green bin thing. My mate has a small garden and hardly needs a bin. I have a large garden and need at least 2 bins. Now I pay about 3 times the council tax that he pays but only get the same number of bins,,,1. I’m expected to take the overspill to the dump in my car or pay for a skip, but I can’t have another bin. Unfair I think. Under the new proposal, I can have my 2 bins if I pay for them, fair enough, but now my mate has to pay for a full year to have his bin emptied 3 or 4 times. Unfair I think.
I understand that councils are skint, but it feels like a bit of a con. The annual council tax increase is capped, but they are allowed to start charging for something previously provided "free". So, assuming the council tax increases by the maximum allowed, they've actually exceeded the cap on a straight like for like comparison. Sounds like one of those wheezes pulled to get round FFP. They'll be selling the Town Hall back to themselves next.
There's always unfairness in some system, and will benefit one rather than another, and often reward the wrong actions and choices, or depending on the individual, push an individual to make choices worse than the ones before. Just a personal view, but I'd rather punish the ones who aren't encouraging to give nature a home by concreting or paving an area, rather than apply a stealth tax to people trying to do the right thing. I fully understand alternative arguments and can see in different eyes, its fairer for people to pay for a service they use, compared with those that don't. But here we're talking environment. A garden kept well helps in so many ways. From mental wellbeing, exercise, natural habitat for wildlife, markers to denote changing seasons, potential to soak up rain water, soaking up carbon, chance to grow fresh produce and save money with less polluted food plus the offset of not using carbon for a large amount of concrete. You'd hope people could be encouraged to engage in that way, rather than be penalised for the preferred actions.
Lol all 5 of my bins have padlocks on, ever since there was a rotting rat in the empty green bin deposited by a neighbour, that and years of abuse of bins
Barnsley Doncaster and Rotherham waste gets sent to a plant between Bolton on Dearne and Mexborough...the first couple of years it was open it was no problem...earlier this year they changed the stuff they add to modify it and it now hums a bit.
I’m sure you are au fair with Executive Pay. So given your experience would you say that the CE of LAs are Paid more or less than comparative jobs in the private sector. Handy hint it’s much less.
