I've always said that. Not just at work either, I've said it to people I know. Have a good day, have a good or have a good weekend.
I do also say Thankyou or simply 'thanks a lot' to customers as they leave but I'd feel it was very fake if I gave a rigid response like 'Thankyou for your custom' which sounds far more scripted and lime I've been told to say it by my boss. It might be an age thing maybe? I'm not sure.

Actually thinking about it I don't say have a good day to every customer, its nothing like that it's just an informal comment as they leave which can be as informal as 'cheers' or 'see ya, have a good day'

Most people I encounter in shops say thanks and see you as the norm

Fair enough. Thanks for your response. We obviously see differences in responses. Thank you for your custom would mean thanks for shopping here. Hope to see you again. In my eyes Which I see as quite gracious. Funny old world. I see have a nice day as a given . I certainly wouldn't expect the opposite. May I ask what age bracket you are cos the first time I ever heard the term used was circa 2013 when I bought my last telly from what I believe was an American company. Also I believe have a good day has been around a lot longer and is not an Americanism. Which I don't have an issue with.( Best American word introduced into English language has to be zit.) Jasper Carrot circa 1980. Brilliant tale if you are able to Google it.
