www.barnsleyholgateschool.co.uk It's still a work in progress but we've launched it so that hopefully former pupils/ staff will send in further photos, memories etc. Anyone who has can send to me via PM, or use the website contact sheet.
Some great photos on there, some of which I recognise!! Well done to you and all involved, a great project.
Brilliant work, sad to read of Mr Manderson's passing on the website - I had no idea about that. He was a proper old school teacher, a good bloke.
Excellent site but can I just point out that, unlike his brother, Brian Greenhoff wasn't at Holgate Grammar School in the 1960s as he failed his 11 plus. His autobiography suggested he went to Racecommon Road Secondary Modern. His cousin, Derek Greenhoff, was at Holgate Grammar in the 60s though!
Only Jimmy was on the board in the hall, where it had a list of all the former pupils who had represented England at various sports.
Great to see that the project is up and running. A bit of a trip down memory lane with some of the photographs and stories Thanks to all concerned for their efforts in putting this together.
This is great Fiona. The photos are fascinating. I had a good look at the teachers’ photo from 1988 and to say that was only 2 years after I left, I only recognise a handful of them. One of the photos was particularly interesting, as you can see my bedroom window on it and the field where Shawlands and Holy Rood schools were built. I grew up directly opposite Shawlands school. It was my grandparents’ house that we moved into when they moved to Robin Hoods Bay. As we used to visit them, before the move, we could see the school being built opposite and I knew that when it was built I would be starting nursery there. My first day in nursery was the day it opened and I was there every day it was open including the days when only a dozen or so of us turned up because of the mega snow drifts we used to get in the 70s (us that lived across the road and in adjacent streets couldn’t get away with staying home!), until I was about 10 and had a couple of stays in hospital (which went on to be the story of my sodding life!). On leaving Shawlands my 10 metre trip to school turned into a 50 metre one, to Holgate. I was still always late though! Gonna send the link to my uncles, as one will have been at Holgate in the late 50s and the other in the 60s. I’m sure they’ll recognise some of the faces on the older photos. They were surprised to see Mr Jarvis and Mr Goddard going strong when I sent them a copy of the photo of you and Mark Bailey with them at the remembrance event. I totally forgot about that and was annoyed, as I meant to attend.
Fantastic. I looked at the photos hoping but not really expecting to find one with my Dad on. But he's on one from 1943 and that's made my afternoon!
Thanks for sharing this……..it’s only when you leave school you realise how good school was and I’d love to turn the clock back!!! I left in 2001, I was fortunate to be involved in the name calling on the remembrance services held each year……..Holgate was a very unique building looking back and it’s a great shame it was demolished. That colour photo you have from labeled 1988, a you sure it’s not 1998 as I recognise all them teachers from my time there and they looked like that when I started In 1996
You might be right - the photo with the 2000 surround appears to have many of the same teachers. I may edit that. If anyone else can clarify, that would be good. Shame Mr Manderson is no longer with us as he would have known. :-(
Best teacher at holgate was Mr Manderson He came to my friends funeral a few years after we left school
Great photos them btw……..a don’t think I’ll have any photos but if my mum by any chance has some I’ll happily send them on
