Don’t you think the best supporters in the country are those that support clubs who are way down the pyramid? Those that can only dream of the Premiership?
Not sure Newcastle are doing much right, just like they haven’t for the last few years in terms of fan to ownership communication. Seems to me the media got hold of this prospective buyer who was at the Liverpool match, Newcastle realised they had dropped one and released a statement about sale. Lawyer then follows up with second statement saying loads is going on when- for all anyone knows- nowt would be going on. As for the noise- it was a promotion party. What would anyone expect? I’ve been to plenty of Newcastle games in recent years while I lived there and- believe me- silence and indifference made by 30+ thousand is still silence and indifference. Just by more people.
Spot on there mate. It's much harder to get excited about following a team that's not doing so well, as is reflected by the gates that some clubs get by on. Newcastle fans are now either used to playing against premier league clubs or walking the championship with their deep pockets. It's like last season when I walked to the ground with a father and son, both Newcastle fans. I quipped that they had a terrible record Oakwell, and the young lad said that they will only have ever played us in the cups. That's not being a great fan, that's having absolutely no knowledge of your own history or respect for your opponents. Fans of other clubs may give it the old #teamslikebarnsley, but we turn out well compared to similar sized towns, our attendances don't spike and fall dramatically like some, and the only time we harbour real expectations is when we're back down in league one. **** Newcastle
Anyone remember Luke Steele's performance at Anfield? The best performance by a Barnsley goalkeeper in history.
I'm not attacking you - just remember the wonderful 'loyal Geordies pre 1992. Also remember them smashing up Barnsley town centre - wonderful fans though :-/
To be fair there’s bugger all north of Newcastle apart from small villages & countryside. It’s like saying Exeter have a huge catchment area. Also one of the poorest area’s in the country. Places like Brighton are better examples of clubs that have massively under performed crowd wise given their catchment area (until recent years).
You’re talking generations ago. There’s no way you or anyone can fairly accuse Newcastle’s support as been fickle this century. They’ve been relegated twice & still maintained crowds of 40k plus & on most occasions close to 50k. For a club in a poor part of the country with an owner they despise that’s pretty incredible.
Joe Kinnear was ‘maybe’ a mistake? Haha. Ashley’s got no idea how to run a club & has either been badly advised or just ignorant. He cracked it for a while with the French market but others started rivalling them for the French players. They then moved on to the Dutch market with De Jong, Anita, Janmaat, Wijnaldium etc but they tried that about the same time as Dutch football has drastically gone downhill & we all saw the result, they ended up in the championship. Too many cheap foreign signings with no plan on how to gel a team.
They went straight back up from what I remember - you always keep the crowds after relegation - we went down slightly after Premiership- a few more years in the championship and they would have drifted off.
There’s no way of knowing that but I think it’s true of every club. Even Man Utd, Arsenal etc get plenty of empty seats for cup games, big city clubs like Leeds & Wednesday don’t come close to selling out in the 2nd tiers. I don’t think there’s a single club in the country that would sell out the home end every week after several years in the 2nd tier
