May be just for Wombwell fans. When my dad was playing with my kids 30 odd years ago he would tell them “Icky from Wath” will come for you. May be regarded as child abuse by modern standards, but he was our bogie man and the kids loved the thrill it gave them. I always thought he’d made it up, but my Son and daughter and my two nieces (now grown up) we’re having a laugh about it. I googled it and was surprised to fine there is an entry for Icky. Did anybody else use him to make the kids behave?
Where I lived you were always warned not to walk down Bawtry Road as you could well be "spooked" by Billy Lindholme. I know lads who have driven past what was the former Lindholme Air base ( now HMP Hatfield) and seen an " apparition" of a Pilot in full flying gear, only for it to disappear in front of their eyes. https://talltales.fandom.com/wiki/Billy_Lindholme
My dad has been known to use it (he's from Penistone) but not in the context of the bogeyman. But if you ask him who a song is by, for instance, and he doesn't know, he'll sometimes say Icky from Wath.
Not heard that but when I was young there used to be a saying that if you told a lie or not being careful etc that Dickie Dark would get you and bite your lovely personk off.
Watch out for “Soft Mick” in Jump. No idea then. Nor now. ps just googled it. I’d forgot it was preceded by. “ Got more?? than “ Soft Mick. Nowt scary I’m afraid.
Soft/Cheeky Mick used to hang round the public toilets on Market Street in Hoyland. Remember seeing him a few times while I was shopping in the market. Clocky Pell was another they used to try and scare you with. Liked his badges did Clocky especially Marilyn Monroe
My grandmother used both sayings. In my early 20s I was talking to a colleague who was originally from Nottingham, and he mentioned that as a child his father said the term "icky fra Wath" if he had misplaced an item. In other words icky must have done it.
and Clocky was a very nice lad too. He maybe not have been the best looking or brightest fella, but he was an absolute lovely bloke. Very polite and very kind. He applied himself to his job as a council street sweeper with total dedication and diligence. A gem IMHO .
My fatha used to say same if he didnt know who somebody was im from Staincross. Made me laugh this brought back nice memories
