That was my first season. My first game was coincidentally also against Bradford in the FA Cup, probably Nov/Dec time. Pretty sure we recovered to finish in mid table too.
All ifs and buts. So did we win it? I was more interested in our 4-0 thrashing of Clyde. I can’t remember the game but I would have been there.
No idea Ian, I was about 12 year old but I remember my grandad who was an Huddersfield fan pulling my leg about the possibility of having to apply for re election to the league for my chosen team, for what seemed like most of the early seventies.
Yup, I remember it well, old mate. We had a very young side that season, but played all out attacking football. Unfortunately, our naivety caught us out frequently. The football was very entertaining, though. Mick Butler was our top scorer and a 'wll o the wisp' style of striker. He is one of my favourite all time Barnsley players (behind only Ronnie Glavin & Pat Howard).
Ian we’re Barnsley we know things are not bad now, we’ve all seen much worse in football and outside football.
It always amazes me how ***** we were in the 60s and 70s. I've always known us as a 2nd division club, with the odd season or two in the 3rd. I hope I never experience us losing at home to Barrow in the 4th division, as some teams will next season no less.
Oh, and another thing, Ian, old mate, our usual line up was:- 1. Gerry Stewart 2. David Yates 3. Phil Chambers 4. Bobby Doyle 5. John Manning 6. Paddy Greenwood 7. Mick Butler 8. Les Lea 9. Brian Mahoney 10.Alistair Millar 11.Kenny Brown.
At a time, and Division, where cloggers were king (tackling from behind was still legal then), we had a very skilful team. The likes of Yates, Doyle, Butler, Lea & Millar were definitely a cut above the level we were playing at. Unfortunately, skilful players were given little protection from even competent referees and none whatsoever from those in Division 4.
It hardly ever seemed to change to be honest. Remember Ray Petit used to appear now and again I think?
