It'd be an absolute no brainer to bring the other George Williams back

I’m a bit confused? I know we’ve had a few lads called Williams!
Is this the same George Williams who was a very limited right back and an even more limited left back? The same George Williams when playing on the left put 50% of his passes down the line into touch?
Steady league 1 full back? The one that got relegated with the plastic MKs?
Interestingly Scott Golbourne was relegated in the same team!

Without being disrespectful to the lad we have 4 fullbacks under contract at the club who are better than him. The lads we have (excluding Pinnilos) have pace to burn at league one level and have the potential to be decent championship player in the future.

Personally I’d dispose of pinnilos and give Aidy White another go over Williams.

And how much money do you think they should have put up for transfers and wages to bring in the type of Championship players you want? £10m? £15m?

What about their wages? £10,15, 20k a week?

unbelievable George was anything but limited. He was solid, he was tenacious, he was great at all aspects of defending and always good at running up the line.

He was phenomenal for Barnsley. He was phenomenal for MK Dons winning player of the season.

We couldn't possibly sign a better defender this transfer window.

Reading wouldn't sell to a rival and in my opinion CB wasn't an issue. McGoldrick not a bad option. Although he was just coming back from an injury and subsequently missed the rest of season through injury from feb. Also, would much rather have Mcburnie. Aside from that, good shout.

Get 3 players for a total of 8 million and pay em all 15k a week 'nothing too crazy' but would have ensured survival. Lets face it losing 6 million in TV revenue we could have used that sort of money to stay in the Championship!

Oh don't get me wrong of course sign McBurnie but there are countless seasoned championship players we could have brought in to achieve safety.

Nothing ensures anything. How many players do you think Sunderland have on 15k a week or more?

Not only that but how many good players would want to come to us when we were towing?

I really don't think there were. And if McGoldrick and Mcshane are the best options then you've done little to convince me otherwise. Anyway, enjoyed the debate but I'm off to get some kip.

If we'd have spent well in January and got relegated at least these owners would have tried but now we'll never know

What if we'd have spent and got players on big wages and still got relegated?

let’s be clear here. To give half the first team average championship wages we would need an extra 4m per season. To bring the team / squad to the average champ salary position per year we would need to spend an extra 10-15m. We know Crynes objective was to keep our club running and in a sustainable position financially we also know he couldn’t / wouldn’t meet that. We don’t know what the new owners have targeted. We don’t know who has actually spent what this season. I would guess however we could afford Williams if we wanted him. The question is, is a striker, goalie and midfielder more a priority when we already have 8 defenders who challenge for first team starts. Maybe this decision isn’t a ‘no brainer’ after all and we do need Einstein to help.
