It's an American thing where all the shops there have big sales on that day. The last couple of years shops in England have been trying to make it a 'thing' here, except for the deals over here are generally not really deals at all - they just put the prices up the week before instead to bring them back down again for the 'sale'.
And followed by Thanks giving. So people run around like lunatics trying to grab anything they think they need and want. And the following day give thanks to what they have got? U S A U S A U S A
Theres a big difference between a religious festival and a day off shopping. Lunatics running asylum.
