I've just spoken with my nephew, who works in the SPL, to ask his opinion on Jack Ross. The consensus up there is that he is probably the best of the young managers coming through and it would be a big loss for Scottish football (such as it is). St Mirren play an open and attacking style of football and are currently running away with the Scottish Championship. He is apparently quite modern in his approach and comes across well in the media. He sounds like 'Hecky mark 2'.
I know it’s all subjective but I was talking to a Scottish fella who is a Celtic supporter on Twitter last night and he said that Saints are playing some really lovely football this season and he was hoping that Jack Ross would stay north of the border long enough to get a good reputation as he wants him as the Celtic boss one day.
I'd definitely not be displeased if he came to us. Not the worst name mentioned by any stretch of the imagination.
Must confess I know little about him. Do you know if he's a coach getting the best out of his resources or is he someone who brings the players he wants into the club. Only ask because if we are sticking to 'the plan' (and I'm pretty sure we are) then it's definitely a coach that we need.
Apparently he has a Masters degree in Economics. Let's hope he can maximise utility. And not provide diminishing returns. And other crap Economics puns.
Hello, first time poster. Through reading all the posts around the Jack Ross speculation I thought I would give my thoughts as a St Mirren fan on the situation and what type of manager you could potentially be recruiting. First of all when Jack took over our team in October 2016 we were languishing bottom of the Scottish championship by double points with the reality of relegation to league 1 looking and feeling very real. Had this been the case we could have been in very serious danger of becoming a part time football team and being stuck in the abyss for many years. When January 2017 arrived Jack set about changing our team and made wholesale changes with 10 players going out and 10 coming in, very much putting his stamp on the team for the first time and showing his very good eye for players that were needed for a relegation scrap. Fast forward a year and not only did we miraculously survive the 16/17 season in the championship, we are currently 14 points clear at the top and it is looking like promotion is on the cards barring an almighty crash, with almost the same group of players may I add. Over his tenure as manager Jack has worked wonders with our squad, he took over a team low in confidence and fighting for their lives and turned us into a fast attacking outfit with a very solid backline as well. From a St Mirren fans point of view Jack will be leaving us in a very healthy position and deserves this opportunity even though he is not very long into his management career. We are under no illusions this is a major step up from what we can offer and probably what most of Scottish football could offer him apart from a few of the top clubs in Scotland. St Mirren are just a small club from the outskirts of Glasgow and we have the misfortune of having to deal with the majority of people around our area supporting either half of the old firm which is a hard pill to swallow however like any other club we have a hard core group of supporters who follow the club through thick and thin and can see the bigger picture here. To summarise, this would be a major loss for us if Jack decides to leave however I have no doubt that he could keep Barnsley in the championship as he possesses all the skills needed for such a predicament and has shown this with ourselves. If Jack was to become the new Barnsley manager you would inherit a good number of new Scottish fans as we would be rooting for him all the way as well as Stevie Mallan. Good luck and let's not forget Sir Alex started his long and successful career with us so you never know haha
Thanks for a balanced, non bitter summary. If he does turn out to be our man I hope you can find someone to replace him successfully. If he doesn't it looks like you've got someone who can make you competitive in your top division.
Thanks for this - its really nice when a fan of another team comes on here are makes a constructive post. I for one would be happy for us if Ross does come to us though I know it will be disappointing for you - we know how that feels having had our last 2 managers poached by "bigger" clubs and if he is successful no doubt he will leave us in a year or so as well - but thats the way of football these days. Good luck with the rest of your season
I attended the Irn Bru cup final at Fir Park along with our resident Arab, got to say I was impressed with your style of play that day and thought you were unlucky to lose. Also your support was fantastic, good luck for the rest of the season, although I don't think you need it, can't see United catching you.
Delighted with keeping Jack, all the best for the rest of the season, will be looking out for your scores, hope you can avoid relegation and push up the table. Maybe start playing Mallan more haha. COYR!
Thanks for your contribution. Always nice when decent fans from other clubs contribute. I’m pleased you’re Manager has stayed, whilst dissapointed he has seemingly turned us down. More I read and saw about him looks like you’ve got a good one. Hope he finishes the job. Will keep an eye out for st Mirren results from now on. Best of luck for the rest of your season
He obviously thought he’d be coming to an upcoming, championship club, taken over by new billionaire owners & would be turning us around & being part of a new ‘exciting chapter’ in the clubs history. Only to find out that he’d be on less money than he is at St Mirren, unable to buy his own players & with a budget smaller than the one he currently has in Scotland. The bloke sounded perfect, upcoming, keen, no one has a bad word for the bloke. We should have got him, use the £500k we got in compensation (that’s after all what it’s for, to compensate us for losing a manager & help replace him...) Grow some balls Barnsley & pay the going rate for exciting new talent. Can’t mek it up.
All about opinions, can’t help but think we will have tried to do it on the cheap. The cost if we get relegated can be equated in financial terms, it’s millions, but the ramifications will last for years when we can’t get back up. It’s a massive massive decision & shouldn’t come down to a few quid.
I agree it's about opinions, but think your original post was more stated as fact. Maybe that was just my interpretation. Rumours are we offered five times his wage and RAC (who is usually bang on) reckons he isnt even first choice.
IMO he should be 1st choice, opinions again, thought he would have been perfect, it will be interesting to see who it is & it sounds like he’s foreign. It’s a really big appointment with us in the bottom 3. I’m worried & I thought Ross was the man, next few days will be interesting.
