Very moving tribute by her Brother. Not only about his sister. But praised the people of Grimethorpe for their fantastic support and a policeman who arrested some of the offenders. On radio Sheffield. RIP Jacqueline.
It was the trial today. Jackie was one of my mums very close friends. Hope she is resting well up there!
Utter scum, all of them. All habitual criminals and one had just done time for killing another pedestrian whilst driving dangerously.
Absolutely tragic. The situation is made worse by the fact that one of the offenders had done something similar previously. Total disregard for human life and they all deserve the sentences that were handed down.
Pleaded guilty - generally reduces the sentence. He was no more guilty than the other three just by being behind the wheel either. Horrendous incident and I hope the poor lady’s family get even a small amount of peace from the fact they are all guilty and have all lengthy (though not lengthy enough in my view) sentences.
Absolute scum with no regards for anyone else. IMO this is where our justice system lets us down , they should never be let out as they will never alter. RIP Jacqueline.
I went to school with Wayne Carroll and he was an absolute lovely person back then, always destined to end up like this. When he got sent down for killing someone a few years ago they shouldve thrown away the key. Scum of the highest order of society, should never be let out again!
Thousands of years of human evolution went into reverse when this lot were born. Looking at their mugshots they look like they should be appearing on wanted posters in Oklahoma in the 1870s. Karn Hill doesn't actually look like his parents were human. Hopefully someone will be waiting for them with a blunt instrument when they get out. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-47319221
The driver deserved all he got - the conviction of the other three is based on the law of Joint Enterprise. That is the other three were judged to have 'forseen violent acts by their associate'. But had they - were they aware that the driver was going to speed, drive dangerously etc? What if the driver had his old granny and her friend in the lorry ( unlikely I know) but we wouldn't expect them to be charged with anything. My guess the passengers will appeal on the grounds that they didn't know the driver was going to do what he did and they 'tried to stop him'
I watched Johnny (Jacqueline's brother) give his feedback on Facebook. It was moving, inspiring and articulate. Some very valid points made too without distracting from the sad and devastating situation. I felt moved, proud and upset all at the same time.
Hill got less because he pleaded guilty. What saddens me is that they'll only serve half their sentences. They need putting down, not sending down.
This is one of the bugbears of the justice system. They should do the full sentence that the judge hands down. . Yes give and take as far as good behaviour is concerned to make life a bit easier for guards etc but come on as soon as judge hands down sentences they’re calculating the actual time they will do This is wrong and needs addressing the public.needs confidence in our justice system but the money to be made from some of the legal eagles exploiting loopholes that shouldn’t be there is worrying tbh.
This. And they will have already had the time they've served awaiting trial taken off their sentences.
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/killer-drivers-to-face-to-life-sentences What the **** have people got to do to get a life sentence for this crime. Watching the videos and pictures of the results of their actions I am beyond perplexed as to what an invidual has to do more than this to get a life sentence. Anything worse than this has to be deliberate not just reckless / dangerous.
By todays standards the sentences were reasonably long, in fact not far short of the maximum allowed. The driver pleaded, under the current system credit is given against a sentence for a guilty plea on a tapering scale depending when the plea is entered, from a third off at an early stage down to 5% in a part heard trial. From what I read in the media, the doctrine of joint enterprise is not at play here (and following a 2016 Supreme Court ruling probably would not have been applicable). Aggravated Vehicle taking covers passengers and in cases involving death the maximum sentence is 13 years. I agree with an earlier comment about the appearance of the offenders. Looking at them they could single handedly revive the quack science of phrenology. RIP the poor lady
