What is the role of linesman in the 'modern' game as sometimes it seems to be a waste of time having them. They do flag for offside and when the ball is out of play, but the referee never seems to consult his linesman and his view is the only one that is considered for anything else for example free kicks, penalty decisions, off the ball stuff, taking throw ins from the right place amongst others. Isn't the linesman supposed to assist the referee if he sees something missed by the ref. Maybe it's the league we are in, technology more used now or just the criteria now for linesmen.
It used to be agreed before a game. Not sure if it's the same now. A referee used to dictate to level of decision making. Wether that be just offside and throw ins or more. They could say no to indicating free kicks. All in the name of making sure that they don't make different decisions for example
