..... and if he's left because of the new ownership - then this signals an EXTREMELY POOR start to that ownership.

The current board of directors could be invaluable to the long term success of Barnsley Football Club.
Principally because they know people in football.

Message to potential new owners - please DO NOT throw the baby out with the bath water.

Let's hope Maurice maintains his ties in some way with the club.

Give over, no ties to the club whatsoever, more involved in his other 600 clubs. Barry Taylor would be a bigger loss.

Impressive. You've now moved onto a stratospheric level of attention seeking!

Maurice is a very well known and respected fella in football - and in other sports.
You cannot be more influential than ex-director of Manchester United.

Huge loss to the club IMO.
And I would bet my bottom dollar that Patrick feels the same.

Well he did help to lure Dale Jennings to the club so you might have a point

Maurice Watkins - the owner of the Phil Gridelet Prize for Chairmanship of a Football Club.

He came in on a wave of publicity with a big reputation behind him.....and was never seen again!

Seriously though, none of us have any idea how much time he spent at the club but I suspect it wasn't much. There are not enough hours in a day to devote to his many interests.

Let us not overlook the fact that Maurice is about to enter his 78th year. Perhaps he's decided to hang up his quill.?
He's certainly deserved it. Let's wait for the impending announcement.
As far as Barry's concerned, I bet it will be Oreo's and Chunky Kit-Kats all round to-day.!

There should only be one chairman, so who will it be?

I sort of agree. The timing of his departure could signal that he isn't happy with the direction the club intends to go in. That for me is the worry.

On the other hand, his presence has been barely felt in the last 4 years (didn't even realise it was that long) so I don't think he'll be too much of a loss.

We might see some movement on the take over front in the near future.

I thought he was brought in to assist with the process of new investment. Surely his departure signals that's been successful.

Like a few have already mentioned, I'd imagine the potential new owners would prefer a chairman that can give the job their all.

Perhaps the new owners don't need him?

There will be very few, if any, on this forum that have even the faintest idea about what MW has done for the Club behind the scenes.

What is for certain though is that he's leaving the Club in a far better position, both on and off the field, than it was in 4 years ago and I wish him all the best, irrespective of his reasons for bringing his tenure to an end.

If it is connected to a takeover then why the surprise. If you were taking over a business, couldn't you want to be chairman or indeed one of your own trusted aides? No brainer for me if that is the case.

No point in speculating for the point of speculating, especially in a negative manner like the OP.

For some really weird reason, I actually agree for once. Under his Chairmanship we have had more highs than lows and Nudger is right, he is a very well respected figure in not just the footballing world, but the sporting world in general. We will see who comes in.

I would have thought with all your important posts on here the club would take much more notice of you than they actually do...
