So that'll be a third on the periphery of the town to go with the ones opposite Morrisons and Asda, but still none in the town centre itself

Haven’t they just refurbished the one at Asda? Seems a strange location considering.
I wonder if they’re going to make one specifically for just eat/deliveroo orders etc so the restaurants aren’t full of delivery drivers waiting to pick up orders.

Aren't McDonald's franchised? So I'd assume Maccies themselves don't have control over where their restaurants go. Presumably the franchisee has just decided on an available unit where the rent is affordable. Probably why there isn't one in the town centre. I'm no expert mind.

Possibly, although you’d have to question the logic of allowing there to be too many franchises in a small area. If one succeeds the other is likely to fail.
As an aside does anyone know what they are building at the other end of the car park at Asda?

As far as I’m aware, the only franchised restaurant in Barnsley is the newest one at Birdwell.

I believe this latest application is to assist with the rise in online orders for delivery, but it isn’t intended to be used as a ‘delivery kitchen’ as it will still have some indoor seating.

Where the recycling bins were? That’s part of the works to widen Old Mill Lane. It’s going from 3-5 lanes where it crosses the River Dearne.

Ah ok, cheers. Not sure how that will make getting out of Asda to go back up Harborough Hills any better, unless the plan is just to shut the congestion further down, but it can’t make it any worse.

I always thought all their branches were franchised…. I seem to get more things wrong than right nowadays though.

I think around 80% are franchised, but their franchising model is different to others. The number of franchised restaurants has increased massively in recent years so the Barnsley ones may now be franchised. They often offer franchises to those that have worked their way up through the business to become regional/area managers. It’s quite common for franchisees to have one or two restaurants whereas Taco Bell/KFC tend to work with a smaller group of franchisees that run way more locations e.g QFM Group that seem to run almost every KFC/Taco Bell in Yorkshire.

Yes, Birdwell franchised - the Tankersely one isn't - not sure about other local McD's.

How Much Does a McDonald’s Franchise Cost?
Due to its popularity, the price of opening a McDonald’s is steep.

The cost falls between £400,000 and £800,000. Applicants must have a minimum of £150,000 in liquid assets for the initial costs and a one-off franchise fee of £ 30,000 loan.

I was actually going to post in the glassworks thread, I was wondering if there are any whispers in the glassworks other than the expansion of the nhs unit the take up of units has fallen off a cliff

Usually what happens is McDonald’s decide they want an extra outlet in an area, will then approach existing Franchisees about them opening another up, from there McDonald’s get final say to location & suitability.
