Given some of the daft posts about asking would we better having former managers back I thought I'd throw Mel's name into the mix. Given our defensive frailties recently Mel would sort us out in an instant by playing his revolutionary 8-1-1 system. I know he's been unemployed since leaving Huddersfield but then so has Robins. So Mel abandon your duties as chairperson of the Maidenhead Gentleman's Bowling club and come save the mighty reds. It is clear that any manager who has not turned around 6 years worth of decline in 9 league games whilst fielding the youngest team in our history is simply not cut out for the job. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mel_Machin I also heard that Gentleman Jim Iley could be coaxed out of retirement for a couple of Fig Rolls and some Sterodent.
I've heard he will bring Marty Feldman looksie likey Julian Broddle to cover our problematic left back position and we won't need a target man cos he will coax Dixie Deehan out of retirement again on the odd occasion that we actually play with a forward.
And maybe Mel could reunite the England youth strike force of Chandler and Foreman who struck fear into the hearts of those standing near the back behind the goals. To be fair wasn't one of Mel's first games an incredible 1-0 Foreman win over the then mighty Leeds, flying pig and all. Sterland that is.
When I called on him earlier this year he's not a well man. Had 15 minutes with him in his flat in Bournemouth really nice bloke who enjoyed his time at Oakwell.
Lol mel machin...i have a letter from mel thanking me for the set play tactics i sent him, he also thanked me for my interest in the club......all on offical bfc headed note paper and signed by him. pmsl wonder if hes still got them. i know he implement a couple of them....i kept my mouth shut after bragging ...first time i saw one of them i told him about that ..and all the lads calling me a lying knob. so you see...pmsl i helped in his down fall.....lol
He got us in the play-offs, for all of two minutes thanks to the Wilkins pleb. I really do have a lot of fond memories of his time as manager.
He did have a eye for a defender even if was from old club. Fleming and Taggart added to Tiler was good business. 90-91 squad was great.
Me too. 89-90 to 93-94 ish. Cudeth Reds for every away match. Redders, Taggart, Robinson, Bishop, Tiler, Archdeacon, Butler etc etc
What we'd give now for a few of that calibre. Sad to hear Mel in poor health but heartening to know he is so well thought of. I totally agree that they were good times and Mel a proper old school football man.
