Messi only third best at club

    My mate described Germany as a football nation who don't necessarily produce superstars but just bloody good footballers. I agree 100% about Matthaus, he was the standout midfielder in Italia 90 but as you say, he was unbelievably consistent and successful at club level too.

    I've always admired the quality of their full backs over the years, something I've never really been able to do with England. Two of the finest players I've ever seen play the game were German fullbacks. Phillipe Lahm, and a player who would be the first pick in a World 11 for me, Andreas Brehme. Genuinely two footed, had everything for me.

    Brehme is probably my favourite full-back too.

    But I could watch Matthäus videos all day. There'll be football fans now, youngsters who don't even know him.
