I can name two Stuart Attwell and erm..... Mike Dean who was demoted in 2017 after a making a series of mistakes
Has the red card been appealed? If so and it was overturned there's really no damage done. It didn't change the game at all.
Yes they have on both counts. Mike Dean really needs removing from top flight duties for this to be honest. If he can get a decision so badly wrong WITH replays and numerous camera angles and without pressure from supporters in the crowd then he really isn't fit to do the job he's paid to do.
Aye but not relevant Stephen. NO ref should have death threats. Period. If a ref's a nob then he is a nob. Still shouldnt have death threats. If he's simply a crap ref he should be dealt with by the relevant FA body and demoted or suspended. Edit: I've just reread and you said you don't condone death threats. I'm losing it mate
Death threats are of course deplorable and hopefully the culprits will be brought to justice. Luckily death threats are usually not actually a serious threat.
I'm sure there are examples of that, but not very often and particularly angry football fans sending messages to a referee. If you really wanted to kill someone, warning then in advance wouldn't exactly help. Not excusing it mind and Mr Dean is correct to report it.
It would cause most people great anxiety to have death threats made against their family. No excuses for this over a wrong refereeing decision.
I'm sure that's the reason he has stood down this week too. Social media can be a terrible thing allowing people to send abuse in a instant. That's the sad part its likely just some fool sending a hateful message with not intention of acting on it but the distress it causes can't be undone.
Me too. But that was on the day. In the heat of the moment. I didn't agree with the blokes running on the pitch but at the time it seemed understandable. I remember reading the statement one of them made in court and he was utterly embarrassed and apologetic for his actions. And that's the thing, it was so infuriating while we were there, and I dare say many of us would still describe Willard with some very choice words, but we didn't go home and make death threats. Screamed and shouted at any one who'd listen, got drunk, gave the dog a hard stare but that's it. Football doesn't make you a psycho, if you're making death threats you just are one.
What have the lower leagues done to deserve having Dean foisted on them? If he's getting decisions wrong in Premier League games then he'll be making the same wrong calls in the Vanarama leagues. Or maybe it's the replays and numerous camera angles that are the real culprits. Referees at all levels make mistakes, they're human after all. The Premier League having sold its soul to mammon (Sky, BT et al) has given referees a thankless task, not helped by the pundits in the TV studios who were no different to the cheats playing the game now as Barnsley fans who were at St James' Park for the Cup Match against Newcastle United when Adie was given a 2nd yellow for an innocuous challenge on Alan Shearer can testify. Earlier in the same cup run Gary Neville got away with a blatant penalty call with an awful challenge on Andy Liddell in the dying minutes of the cup match at Old Trafford. Those two players are the last I'd want to hear passing judgement on referees.
Tin hat on: I get pi ssed off hearing the bleating about officials from Greed league ‘supporters’ about how these ‘overpaid’ little hitlers mistakes are ruining their game. Match officials aren’t exactly super rich, and working up through the ranks, their second income barely makes the effort worthwhile. They do it for the same reason we watch, they love the game. As for their ‘mistakes’? After every match, our own fans can list multiple decisions our own players got wrong; it’s a fast moving game and people paid fairly handsomely to play it make multiple mistakes every time they pull on a shirt. But somehow we hold the officials to a higher standard, despite the fact they’ve worked a full week in their day job to keep a roof over their head, we expect them to be better decision makers than elite sportsmen for a fraction of the cost. I’ll live to regret this; but if it makes at least one other person re-think their view of match officials it might have been worth it And yes I do swear at them almost every game, just I’m more circumspect in the grand scheme of things.
You know comparing referee mistakes to those of players is a great example. I will too continue to swear at them every game though
IMO league 100% to blame. He has proved too many times his skills are not fit for purpose and should have been told ages ago his efforts are no longer needed
