Yes and alter definition of "fit to work". Can someone still do do a job? Taking power away from doctors and giving to "works HR teams and occy health". Can see this resulting on less people claiming sickness benefit or pay and signing on the dole.

 

It'll be an AI written by Infosys that will force people back to work or cut their benefits. Then reports will start to appear in Private Eye and trade papers in 3-4 years, then the national papers 2-3 years after that. Then there'll be a public inquiry before the inevitable hologram vid hit of 2050 when ITV produces the dramatization of the scandal. Followed by another decade of people dying before they get the compensation they deserve....

Be interesting to hear what the Labour alternative is to get people back to work and cut the welfare bill by more people being in work paying tax, so taxes can be cut more.

Those who aren't fit to work should always be supported and given the help they need. Stopping benefits after 12 months will just lead to more crime because people need to eat.

 

Maybe, just maybe. The Civil service could go back to flexible working (a 2019 Tory manifesto commitment) rather than being forced back to the office 60% of the time - making it significantly harder for those with chronic conditions and disabilities to work for them.

Maybe, just maybe. They could do something about the NHS waiting lists (a 2019 Tory manifesto commitment) so those waiting for treatment could return to work quicker - or those with mental health issues can get the support they need (yet another 2019 manifesto commitment).

Maybe, just maybe. They could sort out social care so that those caring for relatives can be freed to return to work. (guess what that was?)

Hopefully the election results mirror the polls, but it is truly staggering how many of the electorate will still want to vote for them.

Absolutely right but do you seriously think that people would have voluntarily stopped going to work (presumably without pay) or down the pub or to football matches without some sort of compulsion? If the public sees the Government not taking it seriously then they certainly won't.

Edit; I won't respond to any more messages about COVID lockdowns because it is now pointless and I'm sure you won't change my opinion and I wont change yours.

 

Generally speaking those who were most vulnerable weren't at work. I had no problem with the suspension of mass gatherings such as sports or concerts.

 

You do realise that ‘the rest of those not vulnerable’ who should have been allowed to just get on with it, were the ones going into care homes to look after the people that needed to be kept away from Covid, so your argument falls down.

Anyway as Brush has just said this is all opinions and everyone is pretty much entrenched in theirs so it’s best just to leave it.

I understand the gripes on lockdown, and I think there’s merit in it but personally I think there was more merit in trying, at least to stop the spread. The government effed that up though by not following what the scientist actually wanted them to do. So we ended up with a **** show no matter which side of the debate you land on.

 

Not going to name and shame but there was a bloke on here talking about his vulnerable son with heart problems at the time who also was posting about going out to the pub right before lockdown when Covid was at its peak.
