Or should i say the scum newspaper. The paper has reported that pizza express now uses halal chicken and have been keeping it secret from customers. Apparently this is absolutely shocking and goes against everything we as a nation stand for.
Couple of things.. 1. Why does a second rate fast food outlet get priority over the tax credit war in parliament? 2. Who TF cares? People who eat chicken know they get slaughtered anyway. 3. The chain by all accounts announced the change a year or two ago.
Interested to hear any thoughts on this.. life or death.. matter

Presumably so that they can reach a wider range of customers?

Bigger profits I would think. Some folk won't eat halal meat, but most don't give a **** and the amount of people who'll boycott the place will be smaller than the amount they can now attract by serving it.

From an animal welfare point of view I find it concerning. I know that some halal slaughterhouses stun the animals, but I would imagine the adherence to ensuring the animal doesn't see the knife or other animals being slaughtered isn't that well adhered to.

I can't say owt. Although I tend to buy outdoor reared meat to cook at home, I love take-away and restaurant curries and that's almost exclusively halal. Doesn't stop me.

I've seen programmes about halal slaughterhouses and our traditional ones - it's ******* horrific however they do it. But I still eat meat.

As far as chicken goes, that Pizza Express are using, is there any difference between traditional methods and Halal? They just chop their heads off don't they? One gets a prayer, the other doesn't.

PS - I reckon, as far animal welfare is concerned, you'd be better off buying British Halal than any foreign meat slaughtered in traditional slaughterhouses. The months/years they are alive will be so much better, which I think is more important than the minute it takes to kill 'em.

Dunno mate, I just find it odd that companies adjust what they supply to cater for a minority of the population without giving the majority a choice in the matter. And a process that under normal circumstances contravenes our animal welfare laws.

I'm trying to get away from red mat anyway, and meat generally, so I'd agree - all slaughter is pretty grim.

Can't say I agree with this. They've adjusted so that they can supply to the majority surely (as Jay said, most people don't care and pretty much all takeaways are Halal). Also, people always have a choice; if the majority you mention stop going, they'll change back sharpish.

It's difficult to find anything trustworthy about the cruelty of halal slaughter as opposed to non-halal - too many vested interests on both sides. But as I recall there have been studies done which state that if halal slaughter is carried out correctly then the massive blood loss renders the animal unconscious before they feel pain, even without stunning (as I understand it most muslims consider stunning to be OK as a part of the halal slaughtering process but some don't). An argument you hear often is that the whole point of halal slaughter is that it's a process designed to cause animals as little pain as possible.

I guess there's always going to be the question over whether it is done properly, but then in non-halal slaughter there are numerous reports of bolts misfiring and not killing the animal immediately, or whatever method used failing, leaving animals both alive and in pain.

In general, I'm relatively satisfied that halal slaughter is probably no worse than conventional slaughter. Which is a good job, really - considering where I live I suspect I'd have a very difficult time tracking down any local restaurants which don't serve halal meat...

Can't say I'm a big Pizza Express user so wtf it's to do with me, but I can't remember it being announced to be honest, so there's the potential for some folk to unknowingly eat a product sourced from a process they objected to.

Not really a choice if the only alternative is 'don't go'.

Question we should be asking is, "Who the **** has chicken on pizza?" It's about as appropriate as pineapple or ******* sweetcorn. Pizzas should be tomato and cheese, and if you're feeling a bit fancy - mushrooms, or italian ham, or pepperoni. And that's it.

Me. I wouldn't even consider eating a pizza that didn't have chicken and red onion on it. If I'm getting a pizza which comes with 4 toppings as standard then I'd have chicken, red onion, ham and either pineapple or sweetcorn. Take that.

Saying that, I'd have chicken on just about anything.

I think the only people it would affect are Sikh's (I think) who's religion prohibits them from eating halal prepared foods.
