it depends on what alternative employment is found for those impacted and what support mechanisms are put in place. if Obama was targeting the coal Industry for political reasons and mines being closed as a form of ethnic cleansing like they were in the UK then that would be impossible to support. If on the other hand a genuine attempt is finally being made to cut emissions in the US thats different. Can't say I know enough about US politics to understand motives.

Re: Obama declares war on U.S. coal industry

So it would have been okay if the Conservatives had closed most of the remaining mines for environmental reasons?

Wouldn't the result still have been the same?

Don't rise to it mate. Just another gloating post for the Tory posters. I suppose a nasty party attracts nasty people.

A deliberately provocative post got a deliberate provocative response. Though calling people the enemy within and talking of smashing them whilst systematically destroying them would seem to be a form of cleansing your opponents.

Re: Obama declares war on U.S. coal industry

The prevailing conditions around energy production are completely different so it's not comparing like for like. But if the Thatcher government had said we want to close coal mines due to the impact on the environment but we will invest in different forms of energy production and guarantee alternative employment I'm not sure that too many people would have objected.

Re: Obama declares war on U.S. coal industry

If Labour had closed most of the remaining mines instead of the Tories I don't think there would have been the same outcry, a lot of the people who attacked them would be praising Labour for cleaning the air and stopping acid rain.

Would anyone really like to go back to those days, every chimney puffing out smoke, smog, and people getting psittacosis and vibration white finger or dying or getting injured in accidents, working in a call centre may be crap but it's surely better than that?

Has the US coal industry got a highly political unionised workforce?

Is the US coal industry dominated by one single union?

Has the US coal industry got union leaders that are hell bent on bringing down the democratically elected government of the US?

Is the US coal industry unions strong enough to even attempt to bring down the elected government?

If the answer to all these is NO..........then comparing the closure of the UK coal industry with the closure of the US coal industry is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes - of course the mines were closed because of the unions.

Thatcher wanted to get rid of a constant threat to the Conservative Party - and she did it.

I'm a bit surprised to see that you don't see this - I would have thought most if not all on here would know this.
