To tick another country off my footballing list. Anyone been to Vienna or Graz? Anything worth seeing/doing that you'd recommend?
Vienna is wonderful. Go to the cafe in the centre historically frequented by trotsky Freud Lenin and hitler it's a remarkable place. On another note I'm off to Nuremberg this weekend if anyone has been/ has suggestions
Haven't been to Nuremberg yet, that's next month! But apparently there are two brauhaus bars worth visiting... Barfuesser and Altstadtbrauerei.
Vienna has so many things to do or see you can't go wrong. Don't miss the 1516 brewery company which has one of the best pubs you'll ever go in! Graz is an interesting place too. Go on the funicular up to the castle and also visit The Armoury ( jaw dropping if you like that sort of stuff!). Two teams in Graz. I've a GAK hat if you want to borrow it.
A while since I went to Vienna, and it was for Christmas Markets (try and find linzer biscuits, huge light shortbread with a jam filling and a corner dipped in dark chocolate) so a bit different seasonally. Vienna is wonderful to just roam. Incredible grandeur and architecture, so just let your feet get you around. I do recall going in the Treasury, which was within the Hofburg and a particular collection of golden artefacts was quite decent to see. The churches are very grand, and one I liked (think it was near the opera house from memory) was a nod to the maximus column in Rome, was called St Charles Church, though its the façade that's impressive, entry was restricted I recall. Try the skybar (we preferred by day) for a good view over the city. try and find Gosser Dunkel, a dark beer (some decent alt biers too). I'd also recommend going to Innsbruck if you get opportunity. You can go up the mountains in a modern funicular and cable car (about 6-8000ft if I recall rightly) which gives an amazing view down below as the river winds through a deep valley. You can check out the ski jump (with a cemetery right beneath it) and the old high street finishing at the golden roof is quaint (some tasty cured meat sandwiches too down there). Hope that's useful, have a great time.
Haha I'm in their standing section, so I'm just hoping they're not an Austrian equivalent of Dresden or Millwall I'll Google the 1516, cheers!
After taking our lass int wheelchair this summer... I know it won't be high priority but is it flat..... not too many steps....pubs accessible....mainly last one
