Perhaps start with the current season in a format that you like, then work backwards as times and resource allows adding what you have. So for the 2018/19 season we can see players, pics, highlights, statistics, etc, etc. Then add in previous seasons over the next few months/years. Chances are you could probably find a few people willing to help out. History is popular and doing something like this could be seen as a worthwhile endeavour.
Like I say, leave it with us. We won't be working back like that though. When we feel we've an opportunity to do it, it will be done properly and all in one go. But as I say, there's a reason other clubs, even Man Utd don't do it. It will affect the responsiveness of the website. So leave it with us, and we might eventually build a site into the existing site, a pure historical website. This isn't hot air. But it's not happening this year so give us time. Cheers!
There already is a proper databse. Book came out a few years ago. Name escapes me at the moment. Who's on the hall of fame panel then? I'd be genuinely interested to know how they came to the conclusion that the Dennises shouldn't be on the list.
There was a Barnsley who's who more recently by Grenville Firth and David Wood, and up to 1998, an official history of BFC by Brian Dennis and John Daykin.
There isn't an online database. That was the discussion point. It's something we'll be looking to bring to life one day. There are articles on the website explaining the HOF in full, including the panel. I can't tell you why John or his father didn't make the cut this time, but perhaps over the next couple of months when we publish videos talking to members of the panel, they'll offer their thoughts on the process. It's my belief that they should be inducted, and I'm guessing they will indeed be, in the future. Their achievements speak for themselves. But it's year one.
Mammoth task that would be creating a database, Grenville and David would be a good starting point, also Arthur Bower.
Thanks Kev - didn't read it properly. I think I must have been discombobulated about the fact that one man who really did save us, and another who gave us our best two seasons and rebuilt the stadium are not on the nominees list.
You're welcome, James. As I've posted on here in the last day, or so, it's my personal opinion that both Ernest & John Dennis should be inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
I remember, back at the time, getting swept along with the 'don't like John Dennis' tide. I never actually knew why, it just seemed to be the general feeling amongst fans where I sat, or who drank in the same pub as me. It may have been his mild resemblance to John Prescott. I simply don't know. Anyhow, I later read his book and did a full u-turn on him. That family would have, and nearly did, sacrificed everything to keep the club running. It was a bizarre sequence of ill timed bad luck that lead us to the dark days. BskyB and Nat West Bank, in particular, orchestrated our downfall. So I hold John Dennis in the same high esteem as Patrick Cryne, as without either, we'd have long since been in an Aldershot type situation.
When I was a know-it-all teenager, I was convinced I knew how to run the club far better than Ernest Dennis. At the same time, I knew I was a better manager than Jim Iley! If anyone disagreed with me, then they were wrong. It wasn't open for debate. All achieved without doing a day's work, or shouldering an ounce of responsibility at the time. When I started filling the vacuum that was the inside of my skull with two or three little grey cells, it quickly became apparent I knew nothing about football, management or life. Things aren't much different now!
You could have re-written history, old mate. The echoes of 'Biglil out!' ringing around the old Brewery stand.
