but does a Tyke become a Cockney if he moves to the East End of London or a Scouser if he moves to Liverpoool? and can women be Tykes - over to you Tinatyke!
I was born (and partly raised) in Norwich before being moved to Barnsley. Didn’t know there was another one like me in the ground!
It better had - I was born in Barnsley but never actually lived there once I came out of the Maternity ward I was taken home to Wombwell where I spent the first 18 years of my life and I've been in Surrey for the last 34 years but I still think I am a tyke
Quite a few different ways of being a Tyke or a red. Obviously those that live in Barnsley and support the lads. Those that are from tarn and have moved away. Those that aren't from tarn but live within a shortish drive, like me. Those that come from other areas of the country and maybe have family connections to the club. Some who don't live in Barnsley get to more games than those that do, and vice versa. The dubious ones are those that watch the reds but don't have anything good to say about the club. Instead going out of their way to find negatives and pick out certain players and people at the club to rubbish. It's all about being supportive. That's why we go in the first place. If you can't be. Why bother?
Thanks. I'm happy to refer to myself as a Red but as much as I'd like to I can't call myself a Tyke. This is because I feel that to be a Tyke you have to be Yorkshire born or the child of Yorkshire born parents. I am neither. (In the same way a Yorkshireman moving to Scotland or Ireland can't refer to himself as Scottish or Irish.) But my Red supporting Barnsley born sons 'qualify' as Tykes.
