Anybody else at Spud’s testimonial? If I remember correctly it was against Sheff U and Tony Currie was their star man. Spud booted him all over the place ( actually that must be a lie cos he would’ve never got near him!). Match was abandoned at half time because of snow. Spud was allowed to dribble through the whole of the Sheff U team but then missed the sitter in front of goal. Well that’s how I remember it!?
When I was in my mid-twenties (1984-ish) I used to go to Penistone Sports Centre to attend Barry's circuit training sessions. If it was a nice evening we would run up to Penistone Grammar playing fields and have a game of football. Not sure what age Barry was by then, but he was not only much fitter than any of us young lads, but he was such a good player that none of us could get anywhere near him. It was a real eye-opener for me and made me realise just how good you have to be to make it as a professional. He is also a lovely man who still stops for a chat whenever I see him around town.
I still have a letter from john mcsevenny thanking me for the diagrams of set moves i sent him when i was a kid ..in it he thanked me and said we will certainly try them out in training...For the life of me i cant remember what they were other than i recall there was about about a dozen or so set plays that id either seen in an very old book or thought of Im not claiming the throw in although i do recall it was one of my pet hates how no one moved for the ball and throw ins were part of my diagrams .... wish id kept a copy
The ball was thrown in to Alistair Millar, he dummied it and left it for Joicey. Millar kept on running toward the bye-line and Joicey flicked it into his path. Joicey ran into the area and Millar crossed it for him to head it in. Or something like that.
Throw in consisted of three players in a triangle 1-3 at base 2 at point .....they then would then change positions as 2 ran in front of 3 as 1 and 3 changed the ball in turn is thrown between 2 and 3 both 1 and 3 would take their marking players with them as 2 would turn and run into the space and latch on to ball ...best way i can explain with out drawing diagram..not sure how to post pictures so simple when its done but effective
I remember seeing that one in action too. Surprising how often it came off. But don't waste time posting pictures on here, just post them straight to Oakwell. Three players moving at a throw-in? We're lucky if we get one moving these days...
Bet the Wednesday fans still hate us for pinching their goalscorer like that. Must be why they wanted SSW so much
It was a real pleasure to be part of the Heritage project interviewing Barry (or should I say Spud), along with other Oakwell greats like Eric Winstanley, Ronnie Glavin, Bruce Dyer, Paul Heckingbottom. Adam Hammill, Marc Roberts, Neil Redfearn and John Hendrie. I've watched them all from the terraces and it was great to meet them all; the one common denominator being a love for the club, the community and the people of Barnsley as a whole. What you see on the Youtube videos are only edited highlights; most of the players interviewed went on for literally hours, and some of the content couldn't be broadcast!
