I reckon they have always wanted a much bigger slice of the champions league pie and have threatened this a few times. Now they have taken it on to another level with their announcement. If they go, the broadcasters will fall over themselves to screen the games because globally billions will pay to watch. This will dilute the domestic and European TV rights. Foreign owners would all like a closed/no relegation style league to protect their investment. There will probably be a backing down or compromise, where the 12 clubs receive more cash, which is what they wanted to start with. Out of interest have any of the big broadcasters aligned either way?
let them go, then tell them their players can’t play for national teams. When they come crawling back put them in the north east counties league
Amazon have supposedly denied speaking with the new set up and Sky put out a statement yesterday saying they supported the integrity of the football pyramid with promotion and relegation. I suspect TV rights were the starting point to get a base value and a cost benefit analysis, so i'd be very surprised if its not known who the preferred supplier is already.
There will have been a lot of prep and planning before the announcement. If its been brinkmanship they'll need thick skin.
For years, the clubs like Man Utd, Real Madrid etc have wanted to do their own TV deals. But the rights are of the competition. So thats what it all boils down to, and the fact that these clubs continue to pay more and more wages that are unsustainable. I hope beyond all this, rather than a Wigan or Bolton, that such a club in the "Superleague" really go tits up. And reset the unsustainable fees we keep seeing. It's well documented that these clubs hold huge amounts of debt. So rather than "teamslike...." having to restructure, sell players, reduce outgoings etc, the superleague ***** just want more money to cover their uncontrolled debts. I doubt however, none of this will ever reset, unfortunately.
