Who was the first club to be given a points deduction. I remember both Swindon (Premier League) and Peterborough (the very old division 3) being relegated for financial irregularities. Clubs have also been deducted points for playing unregistered players. The question is; which was the first club to be deducted points for going into administration? We avoided it when it happpened to us so it is a fairly (or in some cases unfairly) recent phenomenon.
Wasn’t it Leicester who got promoted whilst in administration, they then brought out the minus 12 points to stop clubs doing it and getting no punishment I think
I think it was Middlesbrough. They were deducted three points In 1997 which ended up relegating them from the Premier League. They didn’t have enough players to play a match away to Blackburn because of illness (23 players out) and were penalised. Without the deduction they would have stayed up.
