I remember something like you describe when he saved a free kick from Graham Roberts, who was playing for West Brom, in our last home match of 1989/90 season. In front of the Ponty End. Very similar to the Gascoigne/Seaman free kick at Wembley, except Baker saved it. Couple of others from me: 1994 v Newcastle at home in the League Cup, Dave Watson made a double save late in the game from, I think, Robert Lee and Alex Mathie. To this day I don't know he got of the floor so quickly to tip Mathie's follow up header around the post. Even the Geordie's were applauding. More recently, Kasper Schmeichel had a blinder at Oakwell for Leicester in one of Keith Hill's early games, when Sven Goran Erikksson was in charge of Leicester. Stand out was a double save in front of the Ponty End from Jim O'brien, just brilliant reflexes and change of direction. As good an exhibition of goalkeeping as I've seen against us.
Didnt expect arguments on this thread like. If folk have a different opinion/anything to add to my given options, feel free. Just a lighthearted 'tribute' fred really.
Gordon banks was nicnamed the bank/s of England. The Cat if I remember rightly was Peter Bonetti .As for the save I agree. Best seen live has to be Muller against Preston.
You could be right but I always thought he'd looked across and seen the linesmans' flag so knew he could showboat.
Gordon Banks save v Brazil, followed by Jim Montgomery's save from Lorimer in FA cup final, best one i've seen live was the Muller penalty save from Neil Mellor for PNE.
