personally I've never found it funny and to me is a poor excuse of a "sitcom", if it wasn't for the canned laughter, people wouldn't know where the jokes are.

Some episodes, very funny, particularly the earlier ones. Others, not so good.

In its heyday it was Funny, times move on. Some people enjoyed Black and White Mistrels show and Love thy Neighbour. Different context but shows how our social needs move on.

It had its moments. When Peter Sallis, Brian Wilde and Bill Owen were together they could be funny. It's slow and gentle but that's what it's aiming for. It went on that long and used so many actors it was more like a soap than a sitcom. Without the above three I don't think it worked very well, but when they were together and at their best it was watchable even if it wasn't laugh out loud funny.

The early series were actually ok - but maybe not the series with Michael Bates.
When Brian Wilde was in it (before he left) with John Comer (Sid) and Joe Gladwin (Wally Batty) I'd go as far to say it was very good.

When Howard and Marina were in it, and it was the same every week and a load of old kak. But, I think it was a steady sitcom for the older folk. It should deffo have been cancelled when Bill Owen died though.

Re: it did have its funny times

My view as well some of the early series had some quite funny episodes but it should have stopped once Brian Wilde dropped out at the end of series 8 - so it ran on for about 23 series too long the later series were dire the odd times I tried them

Never found it funny. It was very popular though so plenty must enjoy it.

Oh come on...what's not funny about going down a country lane in a bath only to end up....and here's the best bit...landing head first in a hedge, comedy genius

The walkie talkie one was my favourite...anyone know if it's possible to get hold of the old episodes?

If you could find what series and episode number it was, I'm sure it would be quite easy to find a source.

Edit: Actually, I think they are all available legally as well on DVD

Early ones the best. Had pleasure of meeting Bill Owen once.

It is what it is. Used to be shown to an audience and real laughter but as went on was canned as you say. When I was a kid it was still quite big and I loved and still do the Holmfirth experience. Sad when it ended but was not funny by then.

These sorts of programmes start off poor then they peak then drop off again as they run out of ideas. One line i remember from LOSW is when Howard got caught while out on his bike with Marina. While hiding behind a car he said "i am showing this lady the difference between radial and crossply tyres" :)

I have the Dads army box set and this starts poor peaks then falls off again. My fave from dads army was in the film version when they were behind the barricade in the street. Mainwaring says to Wilson, "if anything happens to me take my rifle and if anything happens to you pass it to the next man" :)

I would suggest Benidorm is following the same format,

Been running far too long. I can remember the original series with Michael Bates, Bill Owen, and Peter Sallis. That was funny.

It should have been discontinued a long time ago.

It was a very good show (not necessarily funny) for the first few years then it just became aged.
