    Nice try.
But you have to look at that 'profit' and ask is that profit an amount of money that will propel the club forward?

When you have paid a fee for the replacement for Roberts and paid the new players wages over 3 years then what profit has the club accumulated - and how has that profit benefited the club?
Keeping in mind that the player replaceing Roberts could be nowhere near as good - which clearly then puts the club in further risk of relegation.

If a player is sold then he MUST be for the right price.

Can I suggest that £3.5M isn't going to move the club forward very much - on the contrary, losing the cornerstone of the team for that miserly sum could easily move the club backwards.

You keep banging on about wages, as if Roberts was playing for free. However we go about it we will have to pay somebody... unless you know different

Not quite sure I follow, but I'll give it a go. Lets assume a random figure? £5k a week. Let's also assume in this example that this is Robbo's weekly wage next year. We pay that from the current bank account.

Now let's further assume Lindsey is on £5k a week. We pay that from the current bank account too. Which is swollen by £3.5m.

Which part of that don't you get?

I respectfully agree that we don't know how Lindsey will perform in our league. Yet. But we didn't know what to expect when signing robbo from non-league too. Remember it is not that long ago that he played a few games for us and was banished to the ressies to improve. We had Long and Mawson instead. What happened when he came back was superb, but it's 18 months ago, max, so you can't honestly say we have been dry loved by getting £3.5m for him? *

    *TBC

I can accept Robbo leaving, but what I can't accept is letting him join a fellow Championship rival, at this stage of the season! We are on a level playing field as it stands (the table) and to strengthen a rivals team with our own players is criminal!
I really hope he goes to Burnley.

I, too, am thrilled by us winning games and scoring goals. However, I also get excited when witnessing pieces of artistry (be that beating an opponent with a wonderful piece of skill, a defence splitting pass, a passing move which opens up the opposition, a dangerous delivery either from open play or dead ball situation).
There's real pleasure to be gained from watching a rough diamond being polished in our team, encouraging them even when they make a mistake, seeing them develop. Preferably these are young players promoted from within, but also when they're relatively, sometimes totally, unknowns and being brought into our club.

    It boils down to this:
Is the amount of just £3.5M gained through the sale of Marc Roberts going to propel Barnsley Football Club to the next level?

I would say anything above £6M for this sought after player would allow Barnsley to benefit and move forward.

£3.5 M for the loss of the cornerstone of the team is neither here nor there - but puts the club in further risk of relegation.

I thought Hecky said he was not going anywhere until we had secured a replacement.?

    What is the next level?

Whatever it is, £3.5m will take us closer towards it, rather than taking us backwards.

I could understand your bairning a bit more if we'd let him go for £100k

The way I see it we should always get top dollar when we are selling players (usually I want at least 2 million over their market value) and give next to nothing when we are buying players otherwise I'm stopping going cos they don't want to go up,

To move the club to the next level we should be looking to bring in a good young player for £1M plus and pay wages to that player of 10k + per week which is £1.5 M in wages over 3 years.
Total cost circa £3M for a really good young player that might not be as good as Roberts.
Alternatively we can buy a bag full of players for about £0.5M each and hope that one of them comes good.

Fair play, but I ask again ....... what is 'the next level'?

We are on an upward curve. We haven't reach Peterborough's levels of big balls in getting ridiculous fees, but we are a damned sight closer than we once were. We're not selling to survive, like we once were (we're selling to compete - is this the next level you speak of?) It's also a positive that we are actually creating players to sell. Its a positive what the club are doing off the field. And its a damned big bloody gert **** of a positive that in about 5 weeks time we kick of another season in one of the biggest Divisions in Europe.

Course we have faults, but they are less than they were 2 short years ago.

5million is right for me. I may get slated but for me robo is the best DEFENDER (by that I mean he defending not footballer) scince de zuew we have had. 3.5 is no deal for me we would get that in january. 5million is about right.

We've sold our arse again to the first bidder, no matter who the chief exec is it boils down to the owner and he seems faster at grabbing the money than BMBC.
