Ronnie in full flight was a sight to behold, never known another of our players that electrified our crowd and terrified the opposition on a level that Ronnie did, Higgy was good but Ronnie was way better. T o cap it all after he had finished I played against him in a charity match and the guy was a true gent, as a centre half he took me apart but it was still a pleasure
Cheers for that. It does rankle slightly that I never saw him. I suppose I've seen Gary Jones though.
He was mate, he was a very special talent and I'm just glad I was privileged to have seen him play. Higgy was brilliant too, not quite as good but still a magical player. It was a pleasure to see them both in a Barnsley shirt.
I think this is right, but someone will correct me if not. In the summer of '77 Kenny Dalglish was sold to Liverpool from Celtic for a British record £440,000. Celtic had just done the double in Scotland. Dalglish had scored 167 goals in 320 appearances for Celtic, but a midfield player had outscored him in that double winning season. A certain Ronnie Glavin. That's how good he was. When Dalglish left Celtic, Ronnie didn't perform as well. As well as great goal scorer, Dalglish was a superb footballer. He'd hold up the ball, Ronnie would make the run and Dalglish would find him with the pass. There was no one to do that for him when Dalglish left the club. When Ronnie came to a Barnsley we had a young midfield player who could chip the ball in to a waste paper bin from 50 yards. Ronnie made the run, Ian Banks made the pass and the goals started flowing again. It was ******* brilliant.
Great news and thank you for keeping us informed during this difficult time for your family. I hope your Dad convalesces well and is back to full health soon.
Great news, but how long until he's back to full match fitness because he is exactly the player we have been needing! Ronnie in last season's team would have shown that 4-5-1 can work if you had the right player making runs to support Super Sammy. If only he were 30 years younger, etc. Actually, if he were 10 years younger he would have been better than one or two players we brought in on loan last season!
I was lucky enough to see Dalglish a lot on TV when I was young, great player, I would suggest the best Liverpool have had. So that's some compliment you're giving Ronnie. I did see Banger for us, but the tail end of his second spell and I thought he was poor. My dad spent much of those days telling me how good he used to be and I used to think "aye, oreight Dad". I soon saw O'Connell and the world was good.
Spoke with Winston Campbell yesterday and he still speaks highly of Ronnie, best player he's ever played with.
Had the pleasure to play with him a number of years ago. Nice guy and not hard to see why he was so good.
