I understand your questions and your logic is, IMHO very close to the mark but like it or not, if we are to stay in this division we are going to need some experience to go along with and to help along the younger inexperienced signings.
Is he trying to go for irony? "Someone who is not all mouth and no trousers." - That's all that Lewis was! Great ideas but no means to try to implement any of them!
I remember Barnsley buying a few unknowns who turned up trumps. Danny Blanchflower, Cecil McCormack, Norman Smith, Steve Griffiths, Johnny Kelly, George Spruce and dozens more. Just because YOU haven't heard of them doesn't make them third rate.
RE: We can only shop in the places we can afford to Who was CLint Marcelle, Martin Bullock, De Zeuuw,Sheridan, Appleby? Thompson? Were any of these proven championship players like? Before signing for Barnsley had you heard of any of these? ****.
I wouldnt pay a fee for Lukkettiti and given his recent injury prone few years not a high wage. He maybe vastly expirenced but he's also 35 years old on a big wage and has knees like rice paper
It's a big gamble. We're asking players not used to this standard of football to keep us up. If they manage it, great, but if they don't, questions will have to be asked as to why we didn't go for two or three players that were already proven. Is saving on players worth the effort if ulitmately it costs us by relegation? But then, what if we did pay big money for players and still got relegated? That's what I like about football: No guarantees.
RE: Best Transfers for last Shipperly has been injured most of the season. SO lets sign a crippled half fit player rather than a fit hungray player who fair enough may not be upto the level but will run himself through a wall. From my veiwpoint, if the team scrap and fight for every minute and still go down ill accpet the fact we arnt good enough and be upset at the fact BFc went down. However, i would be more upset knowing the club risked its future long term signing some over the hill journey men and went down without a whimper. And i can personally guarentee that if this was to happen the final home game there will be a riot.
Agree. Not over the moon................. But totally trusting in the Management to know what we need and who we need</p> If they turn out as bad as packman mindst, I'll be in theeer.</p> Yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooreds!</p>
Here's my take on it: the most important position to fill is the manager. and I believe we've done some shrewd business in that we've got a guy who has everything to prove, has had all the training and coaching skills necessary, and Im not talking about head tennis, but just needs a bit of luck and the team to galvanise around him. It speaks volumes when guys like Moyes and Sir Alex hold him in high regard. From what I can gather, the current squad have responded well to Davey. He also knows exactly what kind of player he wants in each position, and thats far more important than what we pay, the type of player needs to fit what the manager has planned. We have some positions already filled, but we are lacking cover and depth, in order to be able to adapt to the opposition. I've not seen us played off the park yet as such, but I've seen teams 'do a job on us', and thats down to poor preparation and square pegs in round holes. I think we need a few more additions, experience probably, players that can do a job, cos from now til the end of the season, every game is going to be a battle. We're not in the position to be able to play free flowing football, in fact, quite the opposite, we simply cant attempt out play teams that have far more resources than us. The likes of West Brom, Norwich, Derby, Birmingham etc have a much larger wage budget, given the salary cap, our turnover and our attendances, the reality is even if we decided to offer x hundreds of thousands for a player, we cant offer £8k a week on a 3 year deal. Hull for example have 16,000 people a week average attendance, and have just sold a player for £750k and they've had a season in the Championship already. There are players out there that are capable of raising their game to Championship level, look at Anthony Kay. The hard part is finding em and convincing them that we will be in this league next year. I expect at least 3 more new faces in before end of Jan window.
Cureton and Iwelumo who'd have thought they'd be as prolific? or that Colchester could lose Parkinson, promote from within and do so well? very few I suspect. Im optimistic we'll stay up, for what its worth.
RE: We can only shop in the places we can afford to And appoint who? Rather narrow minded point of view...... lets remember without the current board you wouldn't be able to go darn t'well and watch the team you support... PC doesn't have to keep pumping money into the club? if he were to decide to pull out where would that leave us? the only hope for success or funding to provide success would come from increased costs at the turnstile? Davey will want to make a name for himself and by keeping us up will do that... I will watch the games on Saturday/Tuesday and may change my mind but to ask the board to resign is ludicrous!!
Who's side of the argument is that comment on? For or anti-Shepherd? Anyway we would obviously just appoint the academy manager, if we had one.
Ballax on a stick. "It speaks volumes when guys like Moyes and Sir Alex hold him in high regard". Really? Moyes knows him from their playing days. Sir Alex "wished him all the best". Why does this mean they hold his coaching / managerial abilities in such "high regard"? "I've not seen us played off the park yet as such, but I've seen teams 'do a job on us'". If Wednesday didn't play us off the park in the second half - then I maybe need to be re-educated. "We're not in the position to be able to play free flowing football". Aye - let's try to out battle teams with massive centre forwards & huge central defenders. I'm sure that'll work with Reid at the back & Nardy up front. I don't have a problem with having a small budget. I don't have a problem with us trying to develop youth & "bargain bucket players". I don't have a problem with an inexperienced Manager. I do have a problem with hollow "box office" statements ... then a small budget. I do have a problem with us stating our business plan is to consolidate in this league, then expecting kids & league two players to keep us up. I do have a problem with the club making statements that basically rule Davey out & call for an experienced manager ... then appointing Davey anyway. We are being laughed at. We look like we don't know what we're doing. Say one thing ... do another. For the record - I hope Davey turns out to be the best Manager we've ever had & Mattis is playing for England this time next year.
The one signing that 'excites' me so far is Eckersley, as it is very reminiscent of the John Curtis situation. I havent' seen him play but I can well imagine that he'll be a player we'd love to keep at the end of his loan spell and will be upset to see go back. Lucas is a logical signing, but he's unlikely to replace Colgan - his signing is more for squad depth. Mattis is a 'jury out' job. I worry that he'll need time to adjust to the higher level and the time for him to do so might not be there with regard to saving this season. I think back to Gary Jones, who everyone thought was 'the new Redfearn' after his debut in the Wednesday game but, over time, we gradually saw he wasn't good enough. Mixed bag so far. I suppose an equally important bit of news is that no-one's left us yet!
What is it with you... ... and these sensible football posts ???</p> Not a mention of 'spoff' 'thertesixpence' or 'quim'</p> Far far too sensible, in fact i find myself agreeing with every word, except Mattis will play for Eire as his whippet once shagged an Irish Wolfhound....</p> ... err spoff errr.... kitchen appliances.... oh bugger !!!</p>
Simple. I'm trying to open my eyes to the world of association football in anticipation of the bloody interview I've agreed to do tomorrow on Oakwell 90210 AM. I'm actually making it all up. I'm cutting & pasting Roundsman's posts from 2002. No fecker has noticed yet, fortunately. Do you know that Beckham will have to work for just over an hour & a half to earn what we paid for Mattis?
Define 'work' he'll spend all his time poncing around with that mahogany stick thingy. Afternoon tea on one of Saturn's moon with Tom Cruise and his Scientology mates.... 'Oh I think I can see the moon around Uranus, David' said Tom, 'Brace yourself !!!!'</p> Oh he may stroll around the pitch for a couple years then the Americans will realise that as you would put it 'Sarcer is ****'</p>
I never said that they were third rate, I said that they were young and inexperienced, since when did that translate as "third rate". I think you might have a serious reading disorder. Incidentally, I remember all of the ones you listed and I saw all of them play. I even trained with Norman Smith for a while. But when they were young unknowns, they all had experienced players alongside them to help them to achieve their potential.
