they did,nt lease the ground fro athersley rec they shared the ground and all cost associated with it
Given we get a percentage of all the away ticket money generated (on advance sales), there is the first sound business reason that BFC would be crazy to have encouraged this club to grow any more. Secondly, the point also applies to home games. Why pay over £20 a match for division three football (who knows, maybe division 4 at some point in the future), if you can watch football of a lower but comparable standard much cheaper? The man set about changing everything about the club to distance it from Bfc as much as he could and showed a level of disdain for our club from the beginning. Then moaned when he didn’t get support from it. It’s a shame for the players and staff of the club - but I’m having no criticism of Bfc whatsoever. They did what was best for Bfc. It’s him who’s spiteful, and in his last (hopefully) act he still had to dig out this football club. He could have moved he club to Wakefield - but nobody would go into it with him and no one showed the colour of their money. Would be a good thing for Wakefield you’d think - so why not? I’d say he was a big issue to investors. I don’t know him of course but based on what he’s had to say I wouldn’t want to work with him I don’t think. His pot of gold is running down, his toy club he can’t afford anymore, and he’s blaming everyone but himself. What did he do to get potential new fans, what was the attraction? All he did was moan that he didn’t get bigger gates. Way to go lad. Jog on pal, and for reference there’s plenty of plumbers you can use folks.
Where would the support by moving to Wakefield come from? They’re either Leeds football fans or Rugby fans.
There could be a premises sharing agreement as you say, that would certainly explain the lack of registration. It will be interesting to see the implications of SLA’s actions given the redevelopment of Sheerien Park.
Got to agree with this. There’s no sound business reasoning for BFC to get involved. Only the potential risk of losing fans to a cheaper game. I feel for the players and staff, and I don’t know the chairman whatsoever, but fair play for him sticking the money in. Other than that, can’t really see why BFC have anything to be sorry for.
From my understanding the animosity came well before anybody knew he was a Wednesday fan or before he started bad mouthing BFC. IF memory serves me correct, he claims he started Shaw Lane from scratch but he didn't. What he did do is took over a well run family club in Barugh Green who had teams at every age level, then let the junior sides fend for themselves after a few months and concentrated on the 1st team paying players over the odds for the level they were at. It left a very sour taste especially within the junior teams
Spot on, he does seem intent on re writing history, painting BFC as the bad guys and himself as some knight in shining armour, simply didn't happen that way.
Exactly what I thought Troff. He's apparently invested nigh on a million and can't or doesn't want to put anymore in. So basically, he's in denial by trying to blame the failure to change the name or the lack of inward investment as the reason for the Clubs demise. Put simply it has limited support and the cash has run out, so there's no alternative other than to call it a day.
Really don't understand why people are celebrating this, who cares who the owner supports, he's a Barnsley lad who cares about the town and having another club in a respectable league can only be good for the town, if his assessment of how they were treated by Barnsley FC in certain aspects is true then I am disappointed by that.
Absolutely spot on. My son joined Barugh FC aged 5 and played through the age groups until May 17 when he finished with u-16s, most of the lads stuck together for that period too, it was a great community. Even funded our own tour at u-15 to Salou and Barcelona, as previous year groups had done too. I've no opinion on what he wants to spend his money on, no view on his business and would certainly consider using Aquaforce if I needed to. No one should receive dogs abuse for their support of a rival club, but I dont think Shaw Lane's owner was blameless. It was certainly ambitious to try and run a successful non league side, but I think there's an element of a smokescreen in the claim of wanting to give Barnsley an alternative. In my opinion, those alternative clubs are there, and before the impact of coal mine closures on the subs that underpinned other teams, there were plenty in the past too. I know league football is different now, but there were routes into professional football prior to Shaw Lane. Mick McCarthy played at Worsborough, and even recently (although I can't remember nanes) I am sure Barnsley FC gave trials to a few players from Athersley, Worsborough. Mark Beevers was a Barugh FC player when scouted by Sheffield Wednesday. Barnsley FC appear to have a good, if informal, relationship with both Penistone and Athersley in my opinion. He certainly didn't start from scratch, he approached Penistone Church FC, Athersley Rec, and Worsborough Bridge, who gave short shrift, although I think there were restrictions on expanding the ground at Worsborough. Barugh JFC accepted his input and this was met with mixed feelings, but mainly anger and deflation. A good family and community club, parents at all age groups put thousands of pounds into Barugh FC, training kit, balls, kits, refs fees, sponsorship and so on. Literally overnight, the strips were changed from traditional red to blue/white with all other sponsors discarded from the shirts. No respect or recognition for what 20 years of hard graft had achieved. Perfectly within his right to do so you may say, but hardly the action of someone wanting to grow roots in local football for the benefit of the football community. I can say comfortably that the junior teams got less after the "takeover" than before. The ethos was to apparently give the junior players a route to a first team once they hit 18, but that was blown out of the water with the scale of first team recruitment with the level it went to. So it's hard for anyone who was part of Barugh FC to see his venture as more than using the club as a vehicle for that ambition. Had they genuinely started from scratch, I think they would be seen differently from both inside and outside of the club, and get the respect that they craved but didn't really achieve. Wouldn't ever knock anyone for trying and taking a risk, but the lack of grace isn't unilateral to the town and its professional football club alone. I think there is a better side to the guy than what he has allowed himself to be seen as recently on twitter. I thought he dealt with the death of his player, Dan Wilkinson, with great dignity, respect and honour. And I'd like to think that is more the type of bloke he is, had he applied thst type of communication from more humble beginnings, you can only think he might have succeeded in his venture.
I’ve never really paid much interest in the Shaw Lane venture. I’ve just read this guy’s statement and it smacks of a massive case of me me me. He obviously doesn’t give a flying toss about the community. He was in it for success, notoriety and having a play thing for himself. He’s got tired of it now and cos he can’t get his own way he’s taken his ball home. His right to do what he wants of course but spare us the bleating.
I just don't get the argument that Shaw Lane were good for the town. I've watched plenty of games in that league. The number of visiting supporters is usually twenty or less. I don't get the argument that it now denies footballers in the town who cant reach BFC's level an outlet for their talents. There's plenty of clubs at all levels from us to below their level in the local area. The only impact I could see was a minimally negative effect on our attendances. The only way they could realistically move up further in the leagues was with higher attendances. Those would have inevitably been drawn from BFC's target audience.
Who cares about this bloke and his ex-team, I certainly don't. Maybe he can take the Donny job now with Carlos 'the Jackal' Carvalhal as his assistant (Simples!!).
You had a dig at me on Twitter. Craig's a bellend who deserves what he has been given... There's a reason people hate him, he' a complete *****.
I just love it when the smug and self satisfied get their comeuppance. So soon after the "Karma" tweet as well.
Do you know him personally?? Because tbh he is a decent guy. He may not seem it with what he has said in past but he is
