I don't care what they call them self, I'm also not against them, and hope they can get as far up the football pyramid as they possibly can, having said that I would never go watch them as my loyalty rests at Oakwell as it as since the 1950's.
Why would it cause problems? It's a team in Barnsley wanting to call themselves Barnsley. We don't own the right to the name of the town. If they keep going through the leagues, they will soon be Gretna/Rushden anyway.
I think there's another team in Mansfield called Mansfield something or other. There's a Lincoln United, another side called Liverpool etc, etc. It's just that hardly anyone has ever heard if them. As has been said, once the owner gets fed up they'll implode just like Gretna did. I am aware of the irony of that given our own new found rich backers.
Says in the Chronicle that they have applied to the FA to change their name. Not necessarily a given that they will be successful.
They may want to rename themselves that but surely if Barnsley were to put in an objection stating the could be confusion with the names being so similar then the FA would have to make some sort of decision. We in Dundee have a bit of the same with 2 clubs having Dundee in their names. But fortunately there is no confusion as one is World famous and the other is *****.
I'm no expert on the non-league structure but I believe they're actually at the same level as AFC Rushden & Diamonds these days (pyramid tier 7/8). Let's hope neither club goes the same way as the original Rushden & Diamonds.
Best of luck to them. Anyone who’s actually upset by the whole thing is having an absolute nightmare, imho.
There's already been a team registered as AFC Barnsley who were a breakaway Club when we experienced financial difficulties in the early 2000's. They played in the Sheffield County Senior League before they disbanded. Apparently our Club's legal representatives opposed a previous application by Shaw Lane to be known as Barnsley Town on the grounds that fans refer to Barnsley AFC as Town or Tarn which they said would have led to some confusion. AFC Barnsley is not too different to Barnsley AFC and so if we object personally I can see the application being refused.
I can't see how we can really claim AFC Barnsley is too similar to Barnsley because the precedent was set when 'someone' bankrolled that very breakaway club with that name. If it wasn't too similar for 'someone' then then I can't see how 'someone' could complain it's too similar now.
