Out of interest why can't they remain as Shaw Lane? I thought it was the Aquaforce bit that was the problem for them.

They could if they wanted to but the owner says they want a more recognisable name and more people understand where Barnsley is than where Shaw lane is. Also they dont play at Shaw lane anymore so the name doesn't really make much sense

FC United of Manchester, Cambridge City, Lincoln United, Sheffield FC - none of them have a problem.
Doubt anyone would confuse a Championship Ground with a park pitch so can't see owt wrong with AFC Barnsley as opposed to Barnsley FC.

Fair point but if our new owners are going to market us worldwide they won't want to risk any
threat of confusion. My son bought me a wallet thinking it to be a genuine piece of Barnsley FC
merchandise. To the untrained eye it looks OK. There's a metal badge with Toby on it, but the legend
underneath is the giveaway. It reads "Toby's Tykes" and apparently has not been marketed or approved by the Club.
Basically the £15 he paid for it has not gone where it should have.
We'll just have to wait and see if an objection is made by our owners.

I don't know the ins and outs but I thought the owner couldn't stand Barnsley. Why can't he call them South Yorkshire Warriors or Dearne Valley Wasps or something similar, it might even broaden the appeal to outside the town.

That’s simply non-official merchandise. I wonder if the badges hawked by “Barnsley FC Matchday Drinkers” have the requisite approval from all concerned. If not then it falls into the same category, one would expect.

I imagine that both ideas have been instantly dismissed because they aren’t a 90s cheerleading squad or a university hand ball team.

Lol, I wasn't serious about the names as such. How about South Yorkshire United, Dearne Valley FC? Let's face it, their own fans know they're from Barnsley and any opposition fans simply punch the ground into their satnav. There's no need to use Barnsley as a name to avoid confusion but maybe a reason to use it to create a little mischief.

I think the 'cant stand Barnsley' thing is a bit of ********. He's a Barnsley man who grew up and went to school in Barnsley and has a company based in Barnsley. He supports Sheffield Wednesday but that doesn't mean he isn't proud to be from Barnsley he just chooses to support a different team.

Exactly, ST. Do the owners/managers of every other non-league side in Barnsley have season tickets behind the net at Oakwell? I highly doubt it. The level of animosity showed towards SLA is pathetic, it’s playground stuff. By the way, our new owners aren’t Barnsley fans so what happens now? Are we anti-Barnsley as well as anti-SLA? Fair’s fair.

Fair enough, I'm only going on what I read on here which, I know, is a dangerous thing. I still don't see a need to change the name to AFC Barnsley when there's a plethora of less problematic names he could use.
