If I ever get to visit Germany again, I'll make sure I use it. Despite being married to a German for 20 years, I'd never heard it before!

Maybe it's an Austrianism? My colleague who teaches German says there are quite a few regional differences. Plus, having spent a couple of days in Vienna not long ago, it has to be said that their sausages are very special indeed!

I had to Google it, but in its literal meaning you're right, it's a type of Austrian sausage. I'll check with the missus later, if I ring her now she'll kill me!

Maybe if you do a video call showing her what exactly you mean by a "special sausage" then she'll be willing to forgive you for waking her up?

We need another wicket soon, these two are settling in and looking ominous.

Are you trying to un-lower the tone this thread is taking?!

Right, after consulting my German language consultant, Extrawurst is indeed an Austrian sausage, but the idiomatic meaning of "special treatment" is a common general German expression and not confined to Austria.

Thanks for that. I love idiomatic expressions from other languages.

We get a frog in our throats. Russians get a furball. Swedes get a chicken.

We wait for the cows to come home. Russians wait for a crayfish to climb a tree and start whistling.

My favourite is "keep your eyes peeled". I've had loads of fun trying to explain that to Germans, most responses incorporating a degree of revulsion. The actual translation is a feeble "hold your eyes open".
