It may well be blind faith on my part, but I believe we'll go up this season. I'm wrong far more often than right when it comes to football predictions, though. Last season is a classic example of this, when I confidently predicted a mid table finish again! I was also confident we'd be able to avoid relegation from the Premier League. However, to balance that out, I also believed we'd win promotion in the 2015/16 season before a ball was kicked. I couldn't offer up any proof at the time and others were quick to point out that signing players from Brentford reserves, Halifax and Inverness were more likely to mean we'd be in a relegation battle. As Winter approached, I was reminded of this. All the players were poor, our position at the bottom of the table was proof of this and it wasn't up for debate. The following Summer, I believed we'd have a good season back in the second tier, despite being assured by folk whose knowledge of football supersedes mine that we would struggle all campaign due to our failure to sign players with Championship experience. If I'm right this time, we'll be back in the Championship for the 2019/20 season. If I'm wrong, so what? No one will have died. I've not guaranteed that folk will definitely win money were they to place a bet on us winning promotion. For me, anyone who is predicting a season of struggle has every right to express their opinion on here. But so am I with mine. I'm well aware that those who hold a polar opposite viewpoint to me will be just as happy & joyous as I were we to win promotion.
Well said Lil. I'm all for a bit of optimism. I think with the squad we've got we should be OK this season. Rumours abound that our Coach is weighing up moving in on his first signing. Could well attempt to sign a forward from his old club Hannover 96. Two of his targets one of whom is a Ghanain international stand 6' 3", which alongside Moore would give us two big lads up top. Sounds very much as though by taking him on tour to Hungary, Herr Stendel has no intention of letting Bradshaw go, which could be good news.
I can plead ignorance on any potential new signings. But in recent seasons, I've enjoyed the signing of players unknown to me much more than those who I've seen quite a bit of prior to them arriving at Barnsley.
For the avoidance of doubt, what I meant is, at this particular stage, not knowing the final squad available against Oxford in August and going forward from there, its very difficult for anyone to speculate as to how well or otherwise the team will perform over an entire season.
Shows the state of this board when people feel they have to apologise in the thread title because they might be slightly critical. No wonder there's no decent dicsussion on here.
You are I agree - fed up of negativity - players were good enough for championship if they'd been organised properly
Without being disrespectful to next seasons opposition, the majority will be streets behind the quality we faced last season. Basing expectation on last season's struggle against top players is totally unfair. I'll take your "you're in for a rude awakening" and raise you "you might be pleasantly surprised"
Don't get Donny Tyke and Donny Red mixed up! The first one is the Negative Nora. The second is, like me, generally optimistic
It never turns into a decent discussion because biege posters such as yourself try and close down any conversation that may be seen as slightly critical. The board is rife with these people.
No probs Troff. I enjoy reading your posts, you talk sense and you adopt a common sense approach, which is quite refreshing.
Just looking at today's Chronicle. There's a photo of Mowatt. Jeez, the lad must have shed quite an amount of his previous body weight. Looks really fit. Says he intends to stay at Barnsley and doesn't want to go out on loan. In another piece, it says that Stendel is very pleased with the squad he has inherited, but may make two maybe three signings before the competitive fixtures get underway. We are apparently still interested in signing Portsmouths Conor Chapman. His release hinges on Pompey signing Cheltenhams Mohamed Elsa apparently. We are looking for the right type of defensive ball winning midfielder to bring in, with a winger to push Hedges and Isgrove also on the agenda. No mention of a goalkeeper. It says the Reds are also playing hardball over letting Bradshaw or Moore leave, as none of the offers received, match our valuations. Surely after all the angst we've suffered in the past, as fans, that's the kind of statement we want to hear.?
