The variable M1 ones are always on despite not showing a limit. There have been articles about hundreds of fines being given to drivers presuming if they weren't lit up they weren't operating.

The M62 near Leeds is like that, turn the reductions on in rush hour, turn them off when they feel like it! Know what you mean when you slow down for restrictions hate that when you feel like an accident waiting to happen when some are still belting on regardless

I was driving southbound back from work this evening and on the northbound carriageway the camera flashed. There were no speed restrictions on that side as the signs were off so they definitely still trigger at national speed limit.

I received a letter today after being caught doing 82mph in a 60(b-road). Hit with a 120€ fine!

Someone who works in the control centre said that those cameras do some self checks every now and then, so you could be doing 60 and just happen to see em flash as you pass them.

The one near J40 Northbound was flashing on my way to and from work yesterday. When I went thru I was doing around 71 mph. I assume it flashed for the guy overtaking me.
I set my car speed limiter to 70mph as an experiment this morning. I got dogs abuse from a guy who got right up behind my car, because he felt that the speed at which I was overtaking a lorry wasn't quick enough. Even though the outside lane was free, he made a point of getting right up behind, and then swerving to overtake, shouting at me as he went past. I was doing 70mph. Just can't win.

You want to try observing the reduced speed limit in a van (50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways for those who don't know and they seem to be the majority based on how often and aggressively I'm tailgated). Personally I think the lower limits are ridiculous in modern vans and the visibility argument doesn't hold much water given the way people drive around with the backs of their cars full of stuff but I'm a good boy and I follow the rules even though it seems nobody else does. It feels genuinely unsafe at times though as people race up behind and whizz past you (in cars, vans, HGVs, you name it).

Saw it go off three times yesterday going to and from the match too which is not bad going consider you are only briefly in the area. There were cars hammering up the outside lane though.

That isn't for all vans though is it? Only over 7.5t?

I went up to IKEA the other day and it went off 4 times on my way up there and 3 on my way back and i didn't see anybody who i would say was driving recklessly fast.

Yes, it's for all vans that aren't car-derived or passenger vans and the latter means Tourneos and the like, not crew-cab Transits like mine. There are a few qualifying rules but the main ones are that if it's not got rear and side windows on a passenger area behind the driver, or if it's more than 2 tonnes laden weight, then the lower speed limits apply.

I drive between Wakey and Leeds and back every day, lets just say, if this were true, where's my ticket?

Driving down to Cornwall 2wks ago at midnight and about half a mile from Meadowhall turnoff saw the lights flash twice,I was doing 70 and a couple of cars passed me so I surmise that they are on.I think it’s all variable speed limited all the way down to the A42.

Smart motorway measures time it takes you between camaras not just two adjacent could be between camaras over long distance average speed

You don't have to worry about them - if you do the sensible thing and just stick to the speed limits. They are there for a reason, well 2 actually, safety and reducing journey times. The faster you drive, the longer journey times become because of accidents and bunching of traffic when somebody touches their brakes. Speeding on motorways is moronic.

I used to drive on the M42 before the variable limits, believe me they are an absolute godsend.
