Yeah I thought it was 6 or 7. Decent. I think the league could possibly be his level but hopefully he'll keep going this season and can move up to the championship with Shrewsbury. Be good to see.
There always seems to be an unfancied side who either sets the pace early on, or makes a late run in league 1. From memory I recall Fleetwood, Walsall, Chesterfield, Swindon, Carlisle, Leyton Orient and Gillingham all having stints at the top of league 1 in the last 5 years and eventually falling away to make the play-offs at best, where they're usually found out by one of the more fancied teams. Sadly I fear the same for Shrewsbury, although their start has been remarkable, and from reading their forum last week, they didn't expect a win today anyway as they have a poor record at Walsall.
With the bit we saw while he was here - I thought he was easily Championship level. Very strong quick player. I liked what I saw. It's a pity we couldn't find more time for him here.
Yeah that is very true, was it Scunny that did that last season? I didn't pay too much attention to league 1 seeing as we got out of it so I might be wrong. I'm not sure Shrewsbury can keep it up, like you say, usually the more fancied sides end up overtaking but I would like to see it. Hopefully Stefan can keep scoring and keep them up there.
See I'm not so sure, I never really saw anything from him. But then I'm not sure I saw enough of him to make a fair judgement.
he didn't look good enough for the championship with us. but if he keeps on scoring I suppose someone will take a punt on him. Be interesting to see him in the championship playing with confidence and a lot of league 1 goals under his belt
Yeah Scunny set off like a house on fire (although I had backed them before the season started to get promoted) but Fleetwood came out of nowhere to challenge the top 2 with only a month or 2 of the season left and then succumbed in the play-offs to Bradford.
Agree. I think we let him go too soon, but obviously Hecky knows a lot better than me and had his reasons. It would have been very interesting had he not got injured last season.
No player looks good enough for the championship when they're only given a grand total of about 120 minutes across a whole season. Not too many of our players adapted to this level after 1 and a half games and I wish he got a few starts. He body checked the QPR lad to assist Scowen for our last minute winner last season. I thought that'd be his break. We sold Winnall in January, I thought that'd be his break. We were begging for a big strong target man and didn't want to spend any money, I thought that'd be his break. It didn't come, and I hope he makes it back up to this level to prove people wrong. Deserved his shot.
Hecky didn't rate him clearly. So doubt he would ever have got his chance stepping up in championship. He's getting his chance in L1 and taking it, and chuffed for him. Sure someone will make a bid for him if he keeps it up until January. Hope we have a sell on - Wigan paid £1m for Bogle who was scoring in L2! Thank Christ we never went out and signed him for £1m and £10k/week! Wonder how highly the likes of Payne & Luke Berry score on our lower league spreadsheets at their new clubs now. Huge gulf in class between L1/L2 and championship now, which means it's even more impressive we can find players who still manage to make that step up straight away. Even Mawson, Roberts, Hourihane and Scowen struggled at times stepping up to L1. Think it shows how well the likes of Pearson, McCarthy, Potts etc are doing. They'll all have their moments against some class opposition, but I'm really hopefull they, along with McGeehan, Lindsey, Hedges etc will be much much better players at the end of the season than they were at the start.
Completely agree. And I think the fact he spent a season in L2, a season in L1 and now this season in championship is one of the reason. Smaller, incremental increases in quality. The lads coming straight from L2 to the championship may just take another few months to get fully up to speed with the pace and quality. Great signs.
