Went into the club shop and signed the book of condolences before taking a glance at the floral tribute- at that point John Dennis walked past - wonder how he was feeling towads Patrick. When it's his turn will there be the same levels of respect paid. Patrick was seen as the one who saved us .... Will John's be the Premiership/ development of the ground or the admin. Hopefully the first one.
Perhaps without Admin and what followed, Patrick would not have become involved with the running of the club. So I suppose it’s a case of every cloud having a silver lining or summert like that.
I saw John Dennis just outside the west stand having a cig. Must be knocking on now he is another one of them bfc legends you don't want to see get old. Not really his fault the admin it was the collapse of itv digital that caused that. He was the chairman in our most successful time but football has changed massivey since then. Should be remembered for the good times love the club too.
I look back at his time fondly, took us to the prem re developed the stadium, built the academy. A sad ending yes but i dont believe any decisions he made were not with the best interests of the club at heart.
I would imagine he felt like most of us.Sadness for Patricks passing but gratitude to him for saving the club he also loves.
Not sure imagine he was feeling the same as the rest of us. I haven' seen him down oakwell for years is he still a regular?
It’s a difficult one that , there’s no doubt that the Dennis family did a lot for the club , Dennis Senior was a saviour of the club back in the day , John steered us into the Championship and the Premiership . The obvious downside was the Administration, life long fans who had held shares in the club for generations losing them when there appeared to be an obvious way forward in mortgaging the land , which Peter Doyle did , or getting support from an interested party , which happened a year later . Maybe I’m missing something blindingly obvious to others but why did we go into Admin for such a small amount of debt when there were alternatives , was it put to a shareholders meeting . Anyway its history now , John Dennis is still a fan and got us into the Premiership but I doubt he’ll get a statue or a stand named after him
For me he did more for this club than Patrick did, like been said it was during his tenure that the ground was redeveloped so dramatically and the academy was built both more lasting legacies than the club or person has achieved since that time and I don't think anybody who experienced 96 to 98 would deny it wasn't a better time to be a Red than play off & JPT time, Patrick may have saved us but for me he didn't push the club forward only kept us on an even keel, with Dennis we moved forward, imagine if Patrick had come forward to work with Dennis , now theres a thought
He never used his own money the Ashley ward sale paid for the stand and Wilson got us promoted against all odds would be well out if his depth in this day and age.
Bang on Durkar Red. I had numerous conversations with the late Benny Hill on this matter. There were also issues prior to administration re. the John Smith's shares, but that's another story.
John Dennis is another legend. In my mind he was not responsible for us going into administration. The bank & the the broadcasters were. Our overdraft was peanuts, compared to our assets, which it is why people like Doyle came in so quickly. John Dennis loves the club & took us to the highest points we've been to, 1912 cup win excluded. These people have made our club, alongside the supporters. I think Patrick would have loved to sell to another fan, but there wasn't anybody to take us forwards. Respect all round please.
John put our club into admin and therefore on danger when as been stated there were alternatives . The fact itv collapsed Had not put a lot of other clubs in danger as we were so imo that was bad management . Said all that I don’t think his actions were malicious and I get that he wanted the best for the club but the actions he veered towards when the heat was on was unforgivable imo. As for the he took us into prem and improved ground (which the govt were enforcing by the way ) doesn’t make up for almost losing forever the club my family have supported for generations. I’ll bet the Darlington fans don’t worship their chairman for improving ground etc
