I hope he finishes top scorer in the Euros and is MOTM in every remaining game he plays for Sunderland. He clearly doesn't to be with us (as long as we're in League 1 at least), and many fans don't particularly rate him either, so for me the best outcome is whatever gets us the best possible transfer fee.
I don't think there's any I'll will towards him. The majority want him to do well at Sunderland and get a move. The general opinion was he performed poor in central midfield and wouldn't get in over connell,kane or Phillips and wasn't as good as cadden at wing back. People keep saying how he's a international but at some point to progress you have to turn it on in domestic games.
I think maybe a move to Europe might suit him. A slower pace of football in international matches generally. I'm not optimistic of Sunderland putting an offer in for him, so will be back to square one next season, I guess. With Kane likely to depart he might get a chance in centre mid, but he's not really impressed there for us thus far on a regular basis.
Maybe if he does stay he’ll knuckle down from day one, star in every game and then leave us on August deadline day for a million plus.
We’ve seen plenty of examples of how a good tournament can massively overinflate player value. For me that’s our best hope. Has a strong Euros and gets picked up by a European team, for a good fee. I just can’t see a Champ team coming in with top money for him.
Funny thing is though everyone said that last summer when Millwall didn't want to pay the fee. "Styles will be the best midfielder in the league" "he will tear this division a new one" etc. Sadly it didn't happen I'm not sure it was down to lack of effort either.
I bear him no "ill will" whatsoever. Like many, I thought he would be better as a midfielder. This hasn't happened and at left back I would rather have Cadden. So no ill-feelings but I don't want him back at Barnsley as he hadn't delivered the "promise" he seemed to offer. I just hope we can get some money for him, but I don't expect it to be much, will not be disclosed but I'd take £250k-£300k
