    On BBC2 just now.
How can you possibly get your head around the size of the universe, the distances involved.
It is too big to imagine.
    25 million light years to a galaxy = 186,000 speed of light miles per second × 60 seconds per minute x 60 minutes per hour x 24 hours per day x 365 days per year x 25,000,000 = .....
My calculator won't go that far.
Where are we in all of this?
And we worry about scoring goals and Putin and the price of gas.
All the fault of Adam and Eve or the big bang, or whatever.

Have you not read or heard or seen the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

It's not the size of it that bothers me, it's the fact that it's all spinning around.
    Mindblowing. Utterly mindblowing.

And what we see in the observable universe is but a tny speck of sand in a huge desert, sometimes I think about it but my head spins, probably because we truly can't understand the size, why, what etc, I believe everything as a reason but the vastness of space and why spins me out

The Deep Field images are truly stunning, do we have the mental capacity to comprehend this.
I see our moon, the sun, Mars, Venus etc, and can just about get my head around our solar system but beyond that, to our spiral galaxy where the solar system is of little or no consequence in the grand scheme is now beyond me. Just looking at the milky way is so beautiful.
Then multiply our galaxy by hundreds of billions (apparently) and where does that leave us? Still bottom of the league !

My son is doing astrophysics at uni and some of the stuff he's learning is truly mind bending.

The scale of stuff is insane, from immeasurably small quarks to cosmic dust clouds which blanket entire star systems.

And yet we squabble over land ownership and how much money another country owes us.

Will you please ask him if that the furthest object we have observed is actually traveling away from us faster than the speed of light, is that true?

If you think astrophysics is mind bending, have a go at quantum theory.......

I've already explained on a previous thread that one win in the multiverse & we are safe. Well only in one dimension, but it's nice knowing. Apparently Neil Warnock was appointed in early November & we are safely in mid table. Conway has been at the last 5 home games handing out hats & scarves.
