Both Vale Park and Odsal had 50,000 plus capacities, which is why they were labelled the 'Wembley Of The North'. The Valley at Charlton at one time had a capacity of around 70,000.

Coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 in our promotion winning season 1978/79.

Curler, he never hit with power, it was placement & curl. Remember Ally scoring direct from a corner once, probably a season or two before. He wasn't an athlete but his foot was like a wand at times. Think he was right footed from memory?

    Left footed.
As skilful a player as I've seen play for Barnsley. Unfortunately for Ally, right player wrong time. Skilful players like him got no protection whatsoever from referees in the 1970's, allowing Fourth Division defenders to, at times, commit ABH.

Once again, thanks for clearing that up. I know he played on the left, but had a suspicion he was right footed. My memory is unreliable at best.

Warnock was a similar type of player TBH. I always thought his tactics as a manager came from him being booted up in the air so much.

He always used to say getting a free kick from anywhere within range was like a penalty

In 1954 over 100,000 packed in to Odsal for a Challenge Cup Final replay between Warrington and Halifax. Some 7 years before over 47,000 were there for a Speedway Test Match. It certainly had potential and Bradford's Council Chambers must have umpteen mock ups of potential stadium revamps that never saw the light of day over the years!

You are living proof that in the case of BFC that is not the case. Maybe in other areas you are losing the plot. I'm terrible with names, but numbers & dates I'm great with. TBH I was only a kid watching the Iley team, but I loved it. Was great seeing us rise up under Clarke & Hunter, only to be stymied by the miners' strike. And Thatcher's brutal policies. Fair play, we never fell back that far, but greatness had to wait till the Danny Wilson era after that. Some great players in those intervening years though. I really love where we are now, our ethos & current side.

Used to pmsl at Donny fans putting their history on a par with Barnsley on local radio. Got some good donny mates who talk sense. but lots are in a fantasy world.
