This day in 1897 was a big day in club history...... At the Barnsley St Peter’s Football Club Annual General Meeting held at the headquarters of the club; the Clarence Hotel, the first item on the agenda was ‘Change of Title’. Mr I Fox, in accordance with notice already given, proposed “that the name St Peter’s Football Club’ be changed to the ‘Barnsley Football Club’ or, in other words, that the name St Peter’s be removed. Mr Fox explained that the club was and had been for some time, the Barnsley Football Club. People across the country who were not acquainted with the club may not easily remember St Peter’s and that removing those words would better represent the town. He stressed that he did not forget the club’s origins at St Peter’s but also that no-one at the church was any longer involved and in fact the curate at St Peter’s was now associated with the Quarry Street club. Attendees were reminded that some years previously a proposal to change the name to Barnsley Town FC failed but that now was the time to make a change. Following discussion, the proposal was seconded but a counter proposal to leave the name unchanged was also proposed. Both motions were put to a vote and the name change was carried almost unanimously. Barnsley St Peter’s FC would forthwith become Barnsley FC. All of this was reported in the Barnsley Independent a couple of days later.
I agree. On a related point and I know I'll be accused of being out of touch on this, given that the reason Reverend Tiverton Preedy left Barnsley Rugby Club and founded Barnsley St Peter's was because they were playing a fixture on Good Friday, I think it's a pity we play on that day. I suppose we may have issues with the EFL if we were to do it but I sort've wish we wouldn't play on that day out of respect for our founder.
Me and another lad once dumped ours when it snowed heavily. My dad found out and made me go get them back and deliver them
